Mitteilung (1932). - 4. Zum 70 Geburtstag von Edmund B- Wilson ((1927). - Herbst (1866-1946) studierte in Genf und Jena Naturwissenschaften, insbesondere Zoologie. Zu seinen Lehrern gehörten C. Vogt und E. Haeckel. 1889 wurde er mit einem von A. Lang gestellten Thema in Jena zum doctor philosophiae promoviert. Nach einer Reise, die er - wie auch alle späteren größeren Reisen - mit Herbst Driesoh zusammen unternahm, nach Ceylon, Java und Vorderindien, war er kurze Zeit Assistent am Zoologischen Institut in Jena und ging dann an das Polytechnikum in Zürich, um sich tiefere Kenntnisse der Chemie anzueignen. Es folgten Jahre gemeinsamer Arbeiten und Reisen mit Driesch (Zoologische Station Neapel, Meeresstation Triest; Indien, Ägypten, Rußland). 1901 habilitierte sich Herbst in Heidelberg bei O. Bütschli (1906 außerordentlich Professor). 1914-19 gehörte Herbst als auswärtiges Mitglied dem Kaiser-Wilhelm-Institut für Biologie an. 1919 wurde er Bütschlis Nachfolger auf dem Heidelberger Lehrstuhl für Zoologie, den er bis zu seiner Emeritierung 1935 innehatte. Danach arbeitete er noch mehrmals in Neapel und an der meeresbiologischen Station Rovigno. - Herbsts Bedeutung liegt vor allem darin, daß er in der Frühzeit der Entwicklungsphysiologie an einem besonders geeigneten Objekt, nämlich der Larve der Echinodermen, eine neue Fragestellung in dieses Gebiet einführte und eine Methode anwandte, die, später mannigfach variiert, zu wichtigen Ergebnissen über die in der Frühentwicklung der Echinodermen wirksamen Kräfte führte. In Neapel entdeckte er bei Untersuchungen über den Einfluß der Bestandteile des Meerwassers auf die Formbildung der Seeigellarve die Bedeutung der Ionen für die Morphogenese, insbesondere die Wirkung des Lithium-Ions für das animal-vegetative Gefälle. Später hat er sich mit dem Problem der Geschlechtsbestimmung beschäftigt, ein Phänomen, das er wieder im Zusammenhang mit dem Ionengehall des Mediums zu ergründen suchte. Er entdeckte die Wirksamkeit der Ionen für die Geschlechtsbestimmung bei Bonellia viridis" (NDB 8, S. 593). Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 600.
