Anti-war treatise first published in 1815, soon after the War of 1812 (the work was actually completed in 1812). Dodge, born in Brooklyn, Connecticut, was a staunch peace activist who founded the first Peace Society in the United States - the New York Peace Society. He was also a founder of the New York Bible Society and the New York Tract Society. The book is divided into three main sections: War is Inhuman; War is Unwise; and War is Criminal, each with the reasons for each statement. In addition, there are sections entitled: Objections Answered; Hymn; and The Mediator's Kingdom not of this World, but Spiritual. Gray cloth printed in dark blue, frontis portrait of the author, 168 pages. Some light soil to the covers and a little bit of edgewear, mainly to the top edge, good hinges, firm binding, very clean pages free from names or other markings. Hard Cover. Good/None. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Condition: Good. 2nd edition, vi [1] xii-xv [1] 227 [1]pp, half title, 2 engraved plates, contemporary calf, spine with red morocco lettering-piece (worn, front joint cracked, heavily rubbed, corners bumped), lacks front free endpaper, some adge browning at the beginning and end, a few marks internally, old signature on title ("De Vergy" - presumably the author's which is recorded as appearing in other copies), 8vo (208 x 124mm), ESTC N19387 (citing only 2 copies in America and none in the UK). In his "To the Public" at the beginning of this work - which de Vergy lavishly praises as "a most exquisite history of human feelings, a perfect panegyric of nature and reason" - he claims to have found the pocket-book which contained the manuscript "between Northumberland-house and Holland-house". He goes on to describe how he attempted to trace the author by inserting cards in all the daily papers, but concludes: "Whether the author is dead, or out of England, I know not; but I received no answer. I was the more vexed not to hear from him, as I had racked my wits to find a key to the characters of the Lovers, and had not succeeded. Fictitious or real, they are the strokes of a master." A rare epistolary novel.
