Het werk fungeerde als een vlammend pleidooi voor volksverheffing en sociale rechtvaardigheid, waarbij de auteur de schrijnende armoede koppelde aan een noodzaak tot intellectuele en morele heropleving binnen de Vlaamse Beweging. Stracke combineerde in dit geschrift zijn passie voor de Nederlandse taal met een diep religieus en maatschappelijk engagement, waardoor het boek een drijvende kracht werd achter het groeiende zelfbewustzijn van de Vlamingen die streefden naar emancipatie en erkenning in een door Franstalige elites gedomineerd België.
