This work begins with the early settlers to the Nore area in England and goes on to discuss the Goodwin Sands, the Cinque Ports and their private wars, the birth of the Navy under the Tudors, piracy in the Channel, the Dutch wars and the defeat of the Spanish Armada. There are twelve specially commissioned photographs tipped in. There is a map of the Pilgrims way to the front endpapers. There is a small neat signatue to the reverse of the f.e.p. The unclipped dust wrapper is in remarkably fine condition despite its almost ninety years, it has now been covered in clear removable, protective film. The Pilgrim's Way, a typically English road, far older than pilgrimage, has attracted several writers, but this book has a distinctive character.
