First edition of this splendid collection of Swedish views. In a master binding by the Swedish bookbinder Gustaf Hedberg (1859-1920). - The first copies of this work, printed at the cost of the Swedish king, were given away by the royal family; it was not for sale until 1772. The present copy is one of the few ones with the plates bound flat in oblong folio (instead of folded in large oblong 4to), for which the plates frequently had to be mounted within paper borders or remargined to ensure a uniform large oblong folio format. - Hinges imperceptibly restored. Engraved after a drawing made at the scene of the battle by the famous Swedish engineer and master of fortifications Eric Dahlberg. Surrounded in a decorative picture-frame style border with two cartouches telling the story of the battle. In the dramatic scene, cannon bursts explode in mid air, and there are fascinating details of the troops in the foreground. The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark is set in a fictional fortress named Elsinore, believed to be based on Kronborg Castle, in the city of Helsingør on the northeast coast of Denmark. Originally built in the 1420s, Kronborg was rebuilt in 1574. This late 17th-century engraving shows Kronborg under cannon fire during the Dano-Swedish war of 1658-60, when Sweden invaded Denmark, several decades after Shakespeare's death. Some waterstains; appeared folded; a small spot of rust in the right area. 30.5 x 57,4 cm (12 x 22,5 inches).

Sumptuously gilt spine with six raised bands and gilt title-label. Boards splendidly gilt with broad ornamental borders and a darker polished calf centre. Edges of boards gilt and inner gilt dentelles. All edges gilt. A prime example of a master binding by Hedberg. Complete with all 354 engraved plates (including the three title-pages). At the end is withbound the "Index Figurarum Ænearum 1-3", 13 pp., which is not mentioned in Lindberg, Swedish Books. The plates are printed on fine, heavy paper (?skrivepapir?) and are of varying sizes (folio, double folio, and composite). Here, they have been either mounted on or ?enlarged? in the margins, with contemporary fine heavy paper of the same sort as the plates, in order to make them of uniform size to fit the binding. An unusually well preserved copy with only minor brownspotting, with clear prints on excellent paper. A few plates a little closely shaven (eg. the three title-pages). Swedish Court Bookbinder Gustaf Hedberg is considered the greatest Swedish bookbinder, widely famous for his magnificent, lavishly gilt full calf bindings. Especially those in larger formats are highly sought after and difficult to obtain. After having trained as a bookbinder in Paris (1881-85) and London, Hedberg returned to Stockholm in 1886 and opened his own workshop there. In the beginning, he mostly bound books for libraries, but he soon became known for his great skills, evolving into a true artist bookbinder, who bound books for the most prominent people in the country. He won first price for his bindings in both Chicago 1893 and Stockholm 1897, and in 1901, he became Court Bookbinder. He continued to travel to London and Paris, from where he brought back new techniques and styles to Sweden. Since 1969, the historic Hedbergs Bokbinderi, along with bindings and the workshop archives, has constituted its own a special part of Kunglika Biblioteket.

Kobberstukket kort over Christianopel/Kristianopel, sandsynligvis efter tegnet forlæg af Erik Dahlbergh. (Nürnberg, 1696). Lysmål: 25 x 32 cm. Med brede marginer. * Dekorativt kort over den lille fæstningsby, som Christian IV anlagde omkring år 1600 ved rigsgrænsen længst mod øst, som en slags "modby" til Kalmar på den svenske side. Byen blev hærget af svenskerne under Kalmarkrigen og blev i det hele taget aldrig den succes, grundlæggeren havde håbet. Kortet gør fint rede for dens fæstningsværker. Voldene blev sløjfet efter Den skaanske Krig efter befaling fra Carl XI.

Med 4 cm brede margener. * Smukt og meget detaljeret prospekt af Baahus, den gamle, stærke norske grænsefæstning vis-a-vis Göteborg. Borgen og det tilhørende Baahus len blev overdraget til Sverige ved Roskildefreden 27. februar 1658. Baahus spillede samme strategiske rolle for Norge som Kalmar for Sverige og blev afstået på udtrykkeligt forlangende af den svenske forhandler Corfitz Ulfeldt, der i sin fortid havde været lensmand der. Billedet viser den prægtige borg på klippeknolden over elven og byen Kongelv. Beliggenheden er vist et lille indsat kort. Baahus havde aldrig været indtaget og blev det ej heller siden. I 1677 skød norske belejringstropper under Ulrik Frederik Gyldenløve bygningerne i smadder. Trondheims tid som svensk by blev heldigvis meget kort. I løbet af anden krigsperiode fordrev norske tropper svenskerne fra hele lenet, som ved freden i København blev tilkendt Norge. (Landkort/Maps). * Dekorativt kort over Nyborg og byens omegn. På kortet er indtegnet en plan over troppernes udgangsplacering i slaget ved Nyborg 14. november 1659. Det blodige slag blev et af de danske lyspunkter i de ellers så dystre Svenskekrige og afgjorde striden om herredømmet på Fyn. På kortet er indtegnet odden med Slipshavn samt herregården Ellensborg, det nuværende Holckenhavn.

Planchen stammer fra Samuel Pufendorfs store værk om Carl X Gustavs bedrifter i Polen og Danmark 1654-60.
