Segunda edición de este tratado de filosofía natural c…ompuesto en 1372 y publicado por primera vez en 1494, en el cual se estudia el alma y el intelecto humano y se dan algunos comentarios a la metafísica de Aristóteles, que el autor considera oscura y erranda en muchas ocasiones. Perre d'Ailly, o Petrus de Alliaco en latín, fue uno de los teólogos franceses más influyentes de su época. Impulsó la celebración del Concilio de Constanza (1414-1418), destinado a finalizar con el Cisma de Occidente. Escribió el tratado cosmográfico Imago mundi (1410), cuya lectura influyó en Colón, en el que defendía la esfericidad y la rotación de la Tierra. En su Imago mundi enseñó la posibilidad de alcanzar las Indias por el Oeste; estas opiniones de d'Ailly fueron útiles a Cristóbal Colón y le animaron en su empresa. Colón tenía un ejemplar del Imago mundi en cuyo margen había escrito muchas notas por su propia mano, y que aún se puede ver en la Biblioteca Colombina de Sevilla; de ahí que Bartolomé de Las Casas diga que de todos los escritores "modernos", d'Ailly fue el que ejerció la máxima influencia en la realización de los planes de Colón. La teoría de la Imago Mundi planteaba que existían cuatro continentes, dos en el norte y dos en el sur, o bien, vistos desde otra perspectiva, dos en el este y dos en el oeste. Esto daba como resultado un continente al norte, que era Europa; y otro al sur, que era África, ambos en el lado este del globo. Del lado oeste se encontraba otro continente al norte, que era Asia; y la otra extensión de tierra debía encontrarse al sur. Sin embargo era un continente desconocido; el que se encargó de encontrar Cristóbal Colón. Es por este motivo que Colón consideraba que había navegado en aguas australes, es decir, al sur del ecuador, pues tenía idea de haber llegado al sur de Asia. Raro, OCLC localiza sólo 5 ejemplares (3 en Francia, 2 en Suiza y uno en Alemania). No en BL. No he encontrado ningún ejemplar vendido en subasta. Diferentes estudios y ediciones modernas han sido publicadas tomando el texto de la edición de 1505 ante la dificultad de encontrar ésta. Ejemplar de amplios márgenes, B1 profusamente anotada de época, alguna otra anotación ocasional; mancha de agua en el margen interior, alguna mancha ocasional. 196x135mm. (7¾x5¼").
