Textbooks of drawing bound into one physical volume; five of them were written by Johann Daniel Preissler (1666-1737), a German painter and director of Nuremberg's Academy of Fine Arts; the textbook of anatomy was written by Carlo Cesio (1622-1682) and translated by Preissler. The volume contains 4 parts of "Die durch Theorie er…fundene Practic" (textbook of figural drawing; published in 1758, 1759, 1761 and 1757), Cesio's textbook of human anatomy for artists (5th edition, 1759) and a textbook of landscape drawing (5th edition, 1759). The first part of "Die durch Theorie erfundene Practic" features a frontispiece with a full-page copper engraving; every part of this work has 18 plates with copper engravings (either outlines or shaded images); the anatomy textbook has 16 full-page engravings of skeletal and muscular figures with captions; the last textbook has 16 plates with various landscape elements and types, both outlines and finished drawings. Fraktur typeface; pages are decorated with initials and several tailpieces. Seventh edition of all three works. Preissler's scarce and interesting manual on the principles of drawing is fully illustrated with plates of human figures and landscapes. It also reprionts the important anatomical studies of Carlo Cesio (1626-1686), whose Anatomia dei pittori was first published in 1697. This is essentially a book of anatomy for artists, illustrated with two skeletons and fourteen myologic plates.

Eine der schönsten Ausgabe einer Malerschule die wir je gesehen haben. Johann Daniel Preissler (1666, Nuremberg 1737) was a notable member of a German artistic family, originating in Bohemia. His children included Johan Martin Preisler, Georg Martin Preisler and Johann Justin Preissler, all artists. Most notable for his portraits, nudes and history paintings, he also produced drawings and frescoes. He was also known beyond Nuremberg for his "Die durch Theorie erfundene Practic" (full title: "Die durch Theorie erfundene Practic oder Gründlich verfasste Reguln deren man sich als einer Anleitung zu berühmter Künstlere Zeichen-Wercke bestens bedienen kann"), a sequence of works on art-theory the individual works were translated into several other languages and served as textbooks for students such as the Swiss Salomon Gessner right up until the 19th century. By the time of his death in 1737, Johann Caspar Füssli spoke of Preissler and Jan Kupecky as the two most famous Nuremberg artists of the early 18th century. He received his first artistic training in his home town under his father, the history painter and portraitist Daniel Preissler (16271665), continuing his education in the studio of Johann Murrer. From 1688 to 1696 he stayed in Italy, including periods in Rome and Venice. In 1705 he became the director of Nuremberg's Academy of Fine Arts, which under his leadership turned into a city institution. In 1716 he founded the Zeichenschule (drawing school), open to "poor people's children" it proved a great success. With 71 students entering in the first year, its intake was so large that in 1721 Preissler began producing the teaching materials which later became his "Die durch Theorie erfundene Practic" he had previously only published academic works, such as ones on anatomy. Preissler also wrote on the academically neglected topics such as ornament and flower-drawing (in 1725) and landscape drawing (1739), though throughout his writing he insisted that these were only beginners' lessons. Gebundene Sammlung einer Übersetzung sowie dreier eigenhändig v…erfassten zeichentheoretischer Werke des Malers Johann Daniel Preissler. - Carlo Cesi (oder Cesio), 1622-1686 italienischer Maler und Kupferstecher, der ab 1651 die Accademia di San Luca in Rom besuchte und später (ab 1675) auch leitete. Noch heute sind einige seiner Fresken und Hochaltarbilder zu sehen. Außerdem schuf er zahlreiche Reproduktionsstiche nach Fresken diverser Kirchen und Kapellen in Rom. Sein Buch Cognizione die muscoli del corpo umano per uso del disegno" (1679) widmet sich der Theorie der Zeichenkunst menschlicher Körper. - Die erste deutsche Ausgabe von Johann Daniel Preißler übersetzt, erschien 1706 in Nürnberg. Preissler (1666-1737), der einer aus Böhmen eingewanderten Glasmacher- und Malerfamilie entstammte, lebte und arbeitete als Maler, Zeichner und Freskenmaler in Nürnberg. 1705 wurde er zum Direktor der Nürnberger Kunstakademie ernannt, außerdem gründete er eine Zeichenschule. Er veröffentlichte einige zeichentheoretische Bücher und übersetzte das vorliegende Buch des Malers Cesio.
