Two vols. Tall thick 8vo. xv, [1], 681, [1], 35, [1]; viii, [2], 685, [1], 16 pp., plus 8 pp. publisher's catalogue & testimonials. Woodcut-engraved illustrated title, frontispieces in both vols., steel engraved portrait frontisp. in vol. I, nearly 1500 woodcut engravings, text illustrations & plates. Publisher's mottled half-calf over black pebbled cloth, beveled boards, decorative gilt lettering front covers, gilt lettering on spines, a.e.g. (minor bumping to couple corners, minor edgewear to fore-edges, light wear to corners) still a VG bright set. Revised & expanded edition of this popular 19th-century illustrated natural history, offering details for hundreds of different species, and classifications, originally issued in 1859 as "Illustrated Natural History of the Animal Kingdom" without the Darwin & Evolution related essays. Of particular interest in these lavishly illustrated volumes are the two extended essays appended to each volume debating the applications and influence of Darwinism, evolution, and Herbert Spencer's evolutionary ideas, with Youman (1821-1887) arguing that evolutionary science should be accepted and promoted by evangelicals as evidence of the manifestation of the will of the creator. Seelye was a doctrinaire professor of philosophy at Amherst who firmly advocated against Darwinism, and had published a smaller version of this "Criticism" in 1872, and would be reprinted as a separate edition again in 1888, with his primary argument being that no transmutation of the species had been observed, and that the theory had not been proven. The irony for the learned professor was that the edition of lectures he urged his students to read for his classes, contained an entire back cover advertisement for the most important works on evolution, which his students fervently ordered and devoured, most becoming staunch supporters of evolutionary theories. See: James Ungureanu, Edward L. Youmans and the "Peacemakers" in the Popular Science Monhtly, Fides et Historia, Vol. 51, Issue 2, Summer-Fall, 2019; John Kroll, Evolution at Amherst College (1965).
