Romaine d'Aurignac, brother of the notorious Mme. Therese Humbert, the Paris swindler. In 1877 he embarked at the age of nineteen for Argentina where his quarrelsome temperament got him thrown in prison in Montevideo and then in Buenos Aires. Released, he discovered the life of the gauchos, was taken prisoner by the Patagonian Indians and later by the Tobas, was tortured, miraculously escaped, took part in the Argentine civil wars, participated in punitive expeditions against the Chaco Indians, hunted wild animals, climbed the Andes, explored Bolivia, and returned to Buenos Aires and then to France after three years of incessant adventures.
