"The Relief Committee [of the Society of Friends] remained anxious about Boer destitution for it realized that the concentration camps would have to remain in being for some time and it was not clear how much assistance the crown colony administrations would provide. The Committee accordingly sought volunteers to undertake an inspection on the spot. For this task Lawrence Richardson of Newcastle upon Tyne volunteered and was joined by W. H. F. Alexander, the Committee's secretary. They would renew links with Friends already in South Africa, investigate conditions afresh, provide relief on the spot on a modest scale and make recommendations to the Society for the continuation of its humanitarian work.".
