Schutzumschlag etwas abgenutzt, insgesamt vergilbt, sonst guter Zustand / Dust jacket somewhat worn, overall yellowed, otherwise in good condition. - A Syrian by birth, Lucian was a self- made Greek who came to write the best Greek prose known since the days of Plato and Demosthenes, both of whom he claimed as his spiritual godfathers. Lucian wrote rhetorical, critical and biographical works, romances, dialogues and poems. Those who reckon Lucian among the philosophers may not immediately recognize him in this portrait as one of whom all the world was undisguisedly a stage and all men and gods a joint-stock company of players on it. Professor Allinson values Lucian more as a satirist and writer of comedy, than as a philosopher. Lucian was a sincere crusader against shams, inherited or new: the pagan gods, the complex of contemporary philosophies, pretenders in history, hypocritical legacy-hunters, vulgar collectors of books and above all the superstitions, major and minor, of his time. Lucians enduring contribution Allinson demonstrates was in the Aristophanic tradition; in this realm the author ranks him among the truly great satirists who not only add to the gaiety of nations, but also clear the moral atmosphere. Set of Geography Cards Printed in Burlington, New Jersey in 1805 - A Rare SurvivorA rare and early example of American educational playing cards, designed to teach geography through "amusement." Published by the Quaker p. Set of Geography Cards Printed in Burlington, New Jersey in 1805 - A Rare SurvivorA rare and early example of American educational playing cards, designed to teach geography through "amusement." Published by the Quaker printer and bookseller David Allinson, this set comprises a series of text-based cards housed in their original publisher's slipcase. Rather than cartographic maps, the cards present detailed geographical statistics and textual descriptions for various states, territories, and countries, reflecting the pedagogical methods of the early 19th century which emphasized rote learning of boundaries, capitals, and topography. The complete set consists of two unnumbered explanation cards and 76 geographical cards. The present set is nearly complete (lacking 12 cards). It comprises one "Explanation of Terms" card and 66 numbered cards (including a dup of Persia). The content offers a fascinating snapshot of global and American geopolitics circa 1805. Notable American cards include "Mississippi Territory," "Floridas," "VII. District of Maine" (then part of Massachusetts), and "XXVI. Louisiana," the latter described as "Purchased by the United States of France in 1803." Also notable is card "LXIX. Islands in the Pacific," which describes New Holland, New Guinea, New Caledonia, Van Diemens Land, the Carolines, the Sandwich Isles, the Marquesas, the Society Isles, the Friendly Isles, and others. The "Explanation of Terms" card defines geographical concepts such as continents, isthmuses, and peninsulas, providing a comprehensive system for self-study.The set is preserved in its original paper-covered slipcase, which bears the full title and imprint on the front and a preface on the reverse. The preface notes that the compilers (styled as "Several Persons Conversant with Maps") intended to provide a collection "more fully adapted to the modern discoveries and changes, than any they had ever seen." A scarce survival of ephemeral juvenile Americana.RarityThe set of cards is extremely rare.RBH notes only the example sold by Bloomsbury Book Auctions (Sale 3, #166) in October 2007 for $7,735. Map.
