The letter continues, reading in short part: "Portland has a thriving arts community that will respond warmly to your visit. ART/AIDS feels 'An Evening With David Hockney' will draw the attention it needs for a successful fundraiser. If you haven't been here before, we can tell you the northwest offers much in the way of scenery, good food, nice, appreciative people, space, and quiet. But then, having spoken with former Oregonian, Ms. Colman [Karen Colman of David Hockney's staff], can tell you that. Requests for you are frequent. One could say deafening. I hope you will first read the enclosed script [note - this script is not present with this offered letter]. Please don't pre-empt your decision without doing that. I think you'll probably have a good time reading the material, regardless [what follows is more information on the organizational aspects of the film]. Casting is just beginning. Eric Stolz and Daniel Day Lewis are frontrunners for the role of Timothy." This lengthy letter concludes: "Say yes. It will be grand. The poloroid collages and their successors can be a mere prelude for what lies ahead for Hockney and camera - still or moving. The notion of designing art for living theater - is it not an enticement?" Paper Ephemera. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Please note: David Hockney either chose not to contribute two Easter Eggs (the two wooden ones in this collection are unpainted) - or was unavailable to do so - to The White House for its 1989 Annual Easter Egg Roll (see Provenance, below description). Offered are four items: 1) Original Signed Letter on White House stationery from Debra Romash, Director, Visitors Office, The White House, dated February 21, 1989 (George H. W. Bush Administration) to artist David Hockney requesting his participation in the upcoming White House Easter Egg Roll, to be held on Monday, March 27, 1989, by painting two wooden Easter eggs. Measuring 8-1/2" by by 11", the letter reads in part: "Many of America's leading artists and cartoonists have agreed to paint their own special egg for the Egg Roll. These unique wooden eggs will be displayed, on the South Lawn the day of the event, in a special case created by the staff of the Smithsonian Institution. We hope you will join us in this celebration and paint an egg." 2) photocopied, as mailed, "FACT SHEET - ARTISTS" providing instructions (the first reads, "1. Enclosed are two eggs for decoration. One egg is for the permanent collection and the other egg is for the travelling collection." 3-4) Two original (unpainted) wooden Easter Eggs. The letter and Fact Sheet were previously folded twice for mailing purposes, very light wear; one of the unpainted wooden eggs shows a few chew marks (see Provenance, below). Provenance: I purchased this letter, along with the accompanying fact sheet and two wooden eggs as well as its container, a small cardboard mailing box (the box destroyed by my new puppy at the time - there are chew marks on one of the wooden eggs), along with several other David Hockney-related items, at a garage sale in West Hollywood in 1991 given by a young man who then worked at Data-Boy, now a long-defunct gay male bar publication, with its office located next to David Hockney's office on Santa Monica Boulevard and who had, on a few occasions, gone through their trash bin and removed several items of paper ephemera such as these. Paper Ephemera. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. A unique item. Offered are three items: a typed and signed letter from Tamara B. Thomas, President of Fine Arts Services Inc., dated March 27, 1989 to artist David Hockney; a hand-written note she added and paper-clipped to the typed letter (dated "3/27"); and a blueprint drawing of the proposed project. The lengthy letter reads in short part: "Enclosed is some visual information [the blueprint] on a new project in Chicago [Savings of America, 120 N. La Salle]. It is a Helmut Jahn designed building in a prime downtown location - My client wishes to commission an important artist to design the 27' x 54' radiused panel above the entry door to the building (see drawing). It is possible that a mural might be painted in this space, but the feeling is that a mosaic would be the richest, most permanent and most practical medium to withstand Chicago's climate. The client is willing to spend up to $1,000,000 for this work [with "hard costs" of execution, shipping and installation estimated between $250,000 and $400,000]. You are our first choice for this project and we would be delighted if you were interested." The text of the handwritten note to the letter reads in full: "To: Whomever opens this (Karen?) - If DH is out of town or unable to consider this situation until a later date, please [underlined] let us know. If we receive no response at all by April 10 we willl conclude DH has seen this & has no interest. Many thanks - Tamara Th". The large blueprint drawing shows the Savings of America building with especial focus on where the mosaic panel would be located. [The artist who ultimately designed the panel, entitled "Flight of Daedalus and Icarus," was Roger Brown]. Lacks original mailing envelope. Signed by Author(s).
