Plötzlich tritt jemand auf einer Vergnügungsdampferfahrt an ihn heran, erteilt ihm nach Mafia-Manier einen Auf-trag, den er nicht ablehnen darf. Auch soll er die nächsten Briefe rascher öffnen als bislang. Als der Auftraggeber verschwindet, entwickelt sich hier, wo nie etwas zu passieren scheint, eine Gangsterstory. Der Protagonist soll, da er ohnehin ständig im Literaturarchiv im 10. Stock der Universität recherchiert, für den Auftraggeber irgendwelche Zahlen in einem bestimmten Briefwechsel rund um das Jahr 1938 finden. Der Erzähler versteht nichts, doch findet er eine Weggefährtin, die ihn über bislang ungeahnte Zusammenhänge informiert: da gibt es angeblich eine Regierungs-Kommission, die nach Geheimkonten fahndet, auf denen noch immer das den jüdischen Mitbürgern einst gestohlene Vermögen ruht und das nun den rechtmäßigen Besitzern zurückerstattet werden soll; ferner soll jüdisches Vermögen auf Geheimkon-ten ruhen, das ihre Besitzer dorthin vor dem Zugriff der Nazis gerettet hatten und das an ihren Verwandten oder anderen Berechtigte fließen soll. Außerdem soll eine weitere Gruppe ebenfalls nach diesen Kontonummern fahnden, um den offiziellen Stellen zuvorkommen und das Geld auf eigene Geheimkonten umzuleiten.
