Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. The Story & Significance First published in 1854, Henry David Thoreau's "Walden" is the seminal text of American Transcendentalism. A record of Thoreau's two-year "experiment" in simple living at Walden Pond, the book serves as both a philosophical manifesto and a meticulous naturalist's lo…g. This 1939 edition is highly regarded by collectors for its integration of Thoreau's timeless prose with the masterful wood engravings of Thomas Nason, whose stark, evocative style perfectly captures the rustic isolation of the Concord woods. Walden remains a cornerstone of American literature, advocating for individual agency and a deliberate, mindful relationship with the natural world. Physical Description & Provenance Edition: Heritage Press Edition (1939). Publisher: Heritage Press, New York. Illustrator: Features numerous full-page wood engravings by Thomas Nason. Binding: Original decorated cloth boards. Condition Points: This copy is in Fair condition. The binding is somewhat loose, and the front board is beginning to separate at the hinge. The cloth shows minor bumping to the corners. Internally, the book is quite clean; the pages remain bright and free of inscriptions or marginalia. This copy does not include the original publisher's slipcase. Collector's Note The 1939 Heritage Press "Walden" is a favorite among bibliophiles due to the high production standards of the early Heritage Press runs and the specific choice of Thomas Nason as illustrator. Nason is widely considered one of the 20th century's finest wood engravers, and his work here is often cited as the definitive visual accompaniment to Thoreau's text. While this copy lacks its slipcase and shows structural wear to the hinge, the internal preservation of Nason's engravings makes it an excellent "working copy" for a collector who appreciates fine press illustration at an accessible entry point. Nason, Thomas (illustrator).

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Collector's Edition. 335 pages, hardcover. Leather covers with gilt engravings are clean and bright, as are interior pages. All edges gilt. Binding is solid. Contains B&W illustrations throughout. At Walden Pond, Henry David Thoreau reflected on simpler living in the natural world. By removing hi…mself from the distractions of materialism, Thoreau hoped to not only improve his spiritual life but also gain a better understanding of society through solitary introspection. In Walden, Thoreau condenses his two-year, two-month, two-day stay into a single year, using the four seasons to symbolize human developmentâ"a cycle of life shared by both nature and man. Previous owner's paste-in bookplate is present on the front end page, otherwise clean copy. Nason, Thomas W. (illustrator).
