This book helps to explain the duality of the Spanish economy and society which has long prevented the development of a strong national consciousness and clear national goals. Lacking these, Spain has been plagued with internal strife and tensions which still await resolution. There is no study in either Spanish or English that deals with overland transportation in Spain in such depth. Condition: Corners bumped. Jacket lightly soiled, a few closed edge tears else a better than very good copy in a near fine jacket.

The Economic History Review, second series, Volume XXII, Number 1 complete issue. First edition. Despite much recent research in the economic history of early modern Spain, little attention has been given to internal transport. References to the topic are based either on a handful of citations from chroniclers and travelers, which give fragmentary information about pack animal and cart transport, or on a single brief description of the professional ox-carters of the interior. These sources give us fleeting glimpses of carting around Burgos and Salamanca,' an estimate that as many as 400,000 mules were regularly used in Spanish transport in the I540'S, an itinerary of I546 listing the routes most commonly used in the interior, including some which were "carriageable", and a sketch of the routes followed by the professional ox-carters of Castile. Condition: Spines and edges age toned, edge wear, corners bumped, soiled else very good.
