The new commander was Brigadier Davies of the Royal Ulster Rifles together with Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Nicholls as Chief of Staff. In a bitter Balkan winter, in a wild and mountainous country, with a handful of men and some bags of gold sovereigns, he attempted to band together the three main Albanian [resistance] parties and bring strong guerrilla forces against the Germans. The Albanians fought too hard among themselves to fight the Germans ; and finally, hunted by Germans and frustrated by the partisans, the mission was ambushed and became scattered. Brigadier Davies was severely wounded and captured, while Lieutenant Colonel Nicholls died of exposure and post-operative shock after leading the survivors to safety. Davies survived the war and died in 1951. (Information from Wikipedia and the dj inner flap.) . A good copy of an uncommon book in a scarce dustjacket.
