Fowler: "From the point of view of the practical architect this Course d'Architecture was the best work of its kind yet issued and soon superseded François Blondel's Course d'Architecture, and was unrivaled until the publication of J. F. Blondel's work of the same title in 1771-1777." Fowler: "Vignola, another of the great protagonists of the Italian Renaissance, was as influencial in France, as Palladio was in England. There were numerous editions of his work, (39 of which are in the Fowler Collection)." Vignola, along with Serlio, Palladio and Scamozzi, comprised the four distinguished architectural theorists of the sixteenth century. Beginning as a painter, Vignola took up drawing, then architectural delineation and perspective; using these skills he drew many of the antiquities of Rome. Those endeavors had considerable influence on his designs. Vignola composed two architectural treatises, one on perspective and another on the Five Orders. Among the many important commissions Vignola enjoyed, his selection to complete St. Peter's Basilica in Rome after the death of Michelangelo stands preëminent. Text in French. Front and back cover with few light scuffs along top edge of front and back cover. Inked names on top of inside cover and front free endpaper. Some staining along edges of inside back cover and endpaper. Some age-toning of some plates along edges. References: cf. Fowler 32 (first ed. 1691).

[++] Engraving by Pierre-Jean Mariette. Paris, C.A. Jombert, 1756. "Nouvelle edition". [++] This is a library copy, boud in heavy cloth. The binding is not pretty but it is intact, and the binding makes this a very useful volume. [++] The engraved plates are a little difficult to unravel to determine if this volume is complete, as the numeration is a little convoluted. That said, it seems as though the text and the engraved plates are complete. The text: 11.5"x 8.25"; pp 3-6,(ii), (xxxviii), (iii), (vii), 408, (40). The 152 plates as they appear: frontis, 4, A, B, C, 1-12 13/14 (on one sheet), 15-43, 44a, 44b, 44, 45-51, 51a, 51b, 52-57, 58a, 58b, 59a-d. 60-62, 63a-t, 63 v, 63x, 64a, 64b, 65a-d, 66a, 66b, 67-92 (92x2), 98a, 98b, 98a, 99a, 99b, 99d, 99c, 99d, 99f-99s, 100, 101a, 102, 103. (These seem complete according to the eight-page index for the "figures".) Also worth noting is the unnumbered 40pp index section at rear. [++] CCONDITION: there is a perforated library stamp on title and in the corner of one plate, but that's it for markings in the text. There are also a couple of rubber stamps on the front and rear paste downs. About a dozen of the plates have short tears that were repaired many decades ago. The overwhelming amount of the text is clean and bright. VG condition.
