Sur l'ensemble des 7 volumes ce sont donc 1773 lettres écrites par le comte de Bussy-Rabutin ou adressées à lui qui sont rassemblées dans cette édition, la plus complète et la mieux ordonnée à cette date. Cette édition a été rapidement contrefaite (sans doute à Lyon ou Rouen) montrant ainsi le succès de cette correspondance. On trouve un très grand nombre de lettres dans cette riche correspondance de Bussy-Rabutin. Exilé sur ses terres de Bourgogne à Bussy pendant près de dix-sept années à cause de son libertinage et surtout à cause de son Histoire amoureuse des Gaules (1665) qui circula en manuscrit et imprimée pendant toute la seconde moitié du XVIIe siècle, pour la plus grande fureur de Louis XIV qui ne lui pardonna jamais d'avoir chansonné les amours du Roi, Bussy-Rabutin se livre ici dans son intimité. Mais ce qu'il y a de plus remarquable sans aucun doute dans cette correspondance, c'est qu'on y trouve aussi les réponses des nombreux correspondants du comte, fait rare dans l'édition des correspondances anciennes qui sont parvenues jusqu'à nous. On y retrouve notamment la plus célèbre de ses correspondantes, la marquise de Sévigné, Marie de Rabutin Chantal. On sait que c'est le fils de Roger de Rabutin qui édita en partie avec le Père Bouhours la correspondance de Bussy (1697-1709 pour la première édition complète). C'est également le fils de Roger de Rabutin qui communiqua les manuscrits des premières lettres publiées de la marquise de Sévigné, quelques années plus tard. Provenance : Ex libris gravé armorié du cabinet de M. le Duc de Chaulnes. Etiquette gravée et manuscrite : Luynes. Au verso du premier feuillet de garde du premier volume on peut lire d'une écriture ancienne à la plume : "d'Albert Seigneur d'Ailly, de Chaulnes, de Picquigny de gueules à deux rameaux ou branches d'alizier d'argent, passées en sautoir chargé du haut d'un écusson d'or au lion de gueules couronné de même, au chef échiqueté d'argent et d'azur de trois traits.". Il s'agit ici de Michel-Ferdinand d'Albert d'Ailly, duc de Chaulnes, pair de France, vidame d'Amiens, chevalier des Ordres du Roi, lieutenant général de ses armées, gouverneur et lieutenant général pour Sa Majesté en la province de Picardie, et pays reconquis d'Artois, gouverneur particulier des villes et citadelles d'Amiens et de Corbie, et capitaine-lieutenant des chevau-légers (1714-1769). Très bon exemplaire en condition d'époque et de provenance très intéressante.

First edition in German, a translation of Nouvelle methode pour diviser les instruments de mathematique et d'astronomie, 1768. The 6th Duke of Chaulnes (1714-1769), a French astronomer-physicist who was particularly interested in scientific instruments. He observed the transit of Venus in 1761, Paris. "His love for optics and astronomy led to attempts to improve the construction of astronomical instruments." In 1755 he presented to the Academie a piece on rendering instruments of a small radius more accurate. "The substance of this memoir was published in the Academy's . . ." reports. A second paper in the same volume also dealt with the same topic. In 1767 he added remarks on the achromatic telescope. Here for the first time, he applied the microscope to measurement of refractive lenses. In this work, he describes the production of a special microscope, apparently to be built in England. At one time he built the largest electrostatic machine, used to reproduce and demonstrate for the first time in France, the effects of lightening. In 1743 he became an honorary member of the Academie des sciences (Paris).
