Un jour de 1941, à Paris, en pleine occupation allemande, un dessinateur, Jean Bruller, et un écrivain, Pierre de Lescure, décidèrent de fonder une maison d'édition clandestine. Ainsi naquirent les Éditions de Minuit. Le premier livre publié, Le Silence de la mer, de Vercors (pseudonyme de Jean Bruller), commencera à circuler de main en main en octobre 1942. Déjà, aidés par Jean Paulhan, les éditeurs s'étaient mis en quête de nouveaux manuscrits. Un volume collectif, Chroniques interdites, paraissait en avril 1943. Un autre, L'Honneur des poètes, en juillet, rassemblait des poèmes recueillis par Paul Eluard. Le Cahier noir, de François Mauriac, était publié en août, Le Musée Grévin, d'Aragon, en septembre. Jusqu'à la libération de Paris, les Éditions de Minuit firent ainsi paraître, grâce à une poignée d'imprimeurs courageux, une vingtaine de plaquettes où se retrouvaient, sous des pseudonymes, quelques-uns des plus grands écrivains français, d'Eluard et Aragon à Maritain et Mauriac, en passant par Paulhan, Chamson, Gide, et même John Steinbeck, pour la première traduction française intégrale de The Moon is down (Nuits noires) .
