(Dean of Peterborough; later Bishop of Ely) Edition: Sixth Edition, Corrected Publisher: Richard Chiswell, at the Rose and Crown in St Paul's Church-Yard Place/Date: London, MDCLXXXVII (1687) Imprimatur: "Carolus Alston, R. P. D. Hen. Episc. Lond. a Sacris Domesticis" ? licensed under Henry Compton, Bishop of London Binding: Modern full calf over boards, red gilt spine label Pagination: [16], 527 pp. (collated complete) Format: 8vo ? Description A complete example of the 1687 sixth edition of Symon Patrick's influential Anglican devotional allegory The Parable of the Pilgrim, printed for Richard Chiswell, one of the foremost London booksellers of the late Stuart period. This copy retains the entire original 17th-century text block, but has been professionally rebound in modern full calf (light tan) over boards, with a red morocco and gilt title label to the spine. The binding is clean, tight, and unworn, providing a durable preservation covering for the original leaves. Pages show age-toning and mild marginal wear consistent with a 336-year-old book, but the text remains clear and fully legible throughout. No missing leaves; collated complete at 527 pages. The imprimatur page bears the authority of Charles Alston, domestic chaplain to Bishop Henry Compton ? confirming this as an officially licensed devotional work printed during the Restoration era. Condition: Text block original and complete Modern full-calf binding in excellent condition Pages toned, occasional spots, but no major stains or tears No ownership inscriptions detected A sound and presentable example of this important 17th-century theological work.

A decent hardback first edition (1873), but with some non-uniform fading to the boards, a sunned spine and a bit of rubbing at the tail of the spine. There is an old-looking previous ownership name on the front paste-down, and scattered foxing throughout (the foxing is worse in the first part of the book). The binding is secure. The book is protected by a clear plastic jacket, which is stuck to itself, not the book. Overall, a decent but slightly tired hardback first edition.

Add to basket4pp, 4to. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. Addressed on reverse of second leaf, with small seal in red wax and postmark, to 'Revd. Charles Merivale | St John's College | Cambridge'. A long letter, with the four pages of text followed by a long postscript at the head of the first page, continuing to the last. An interesting intimate letter, discussing his activities and writing, and ending with aThe letter begins: 'My dear Charles | I still direct from these unfortunate lodgings having been quite unable to find chambers to suit me in which I consider myself particularly unlucky: as all the world except myself appear to have found their way into decent habitations, Neate in particular who has got a very pleasant little set of rooms in Lincolns Inn for almost no rent at all.' He turns to 'Other news', with reference to 'the revisorship', his 'Wiltshire operations', 'a stupid barbarian by name Taunton', 'Mrs. Spring Rice' and her husband (who is 'feasting ministers in his house in Hertfordshire, instead of making up & paying the accounts of us unhappy barristers who are desperately out of pocket by his delay'). He has his 'hands over full of writing', but does not find that he can 'do satisfactorily more than one thing at a time: consequently I undertake a great many jobs more than I am able to perform'. He has 'just finished or nearly so a long paper for Cochrane about the Italian Wars of Charles V.', and has 'also on the stocks one or two small matters for Blackwood: & ought to be in correspondence with Napier, who wants me to select a subject & write for him, but nothing has occurred to me worthy of my genius.' He continues with reference to the Edinburgh Review, the 'Revue des 2 mondes a tolerable Paris journal', and again to his publisher Cochrane. As the letter continues there are references to 'Mrs. Mariott', 'De Morgan' and 'Mr. Frere'. He asks to know what his brother's 'proposals are with respect to Henry Drury'. The postscript gives a shrewd assessment of Dickens's future friend Edward Bulwer-Lytton: 'I have not read much of Bulwer & what I have I greatly despise. Not that I do not agree in many of his public ideas: but there is a mixture of affected philosophy & mortified vanity about him which would be amusing in one chapter but is detestable in 2 volumes - he seems to have aimed at being the most fashionable man in London - a leader in the House of Commons - and a first rate writer, all at once: & to think it very hard that he has not succeeded - Had he addicted himself to one line only the composition of works requiring a mixture of passion & affection, I think he would have come nearer Rousseau & de Stael than any English writer has done.'.

Add to basketBoth in good condition, lightly aged, with thin strip from mount adhering, and crease lines from folding. Two excellent long letters in Spedding's neat and close hand, full of content regarding the relationship between Victorian author, publisher and reader. The topic is Spedding's preparation for the publication of his pamphlet 'Publishers and Authors' (London: J. R. Smith, 1867). Both letters addressed to 'My dear Mervivale'. ONE: 3 September 1866. 4pp, 18mo. On a bifolium. A 'communication from America [.] about 3 months since', has put into his head an old paper of his, 'gathering dust in a drawer', regarding 'the complaints of the buyer and reader against the publisher and bookseller, for the many inconveniences to which they put him, without sufficient reason, by the conditions under which they supply him with the books he wants'. Speeding has been informed by 'Donne' that Merivale has 'studied and preserved your publishing accounts, in which case you may be able to supply me with a fact or two in illustration' for a second paper he is writing. He describes the history of the paper: 'About 4 years ago the contemplation of Longmans' proceedings suggested to me some remarks upon the subject of publishing generally - which I offered to Froude [i.e. J. A. Froude, as editor of Fraser's Magazine] under the title "Proposals for a better understanding between book-publishers and book-buyers, by one who buys books to read." But he felt it his duty to shew it first to old Parker; [the Cambridge bookseller J. W. Parker] who interposed an emphatic veto. And Tom Hughes tried it afterwards with Macmillan, with no better success.' He proceeds to discuss 'the "half-profits" bargain (which I had understood to be the one usually offered here to untried authors)' and 'the "Royalty" system' ('which was new to me'). Having heard that the Fortnightly Review was 'not under domination of any publisher', he has sent his second paper to the editor G. H. Lewes (George Eliot's husband), who, 'though he agrees with me and wants the question to be agitated, does not feel justified in exposing other people's property to the damage which he thinks it would cause - through the hostility which it would certainly excite in the general body of publishers'. Spedding proposes to print the two papers himself, 'in a handsome little volume, fit to lie on a drawing-room table, and to circulate it as widely as I can, perhaps with the title "Forbidden Questions - concerning Publishers, Authors, booksellers, purchasers, and readers."' He ends by discussing a suggestion from Lewes on how to strengthen his case. TWO: 8pp, 18mo. On two bifoliums. He begins by explaining that the time 'was never less convenient [.] for paying visits', as he is 'preparing for a migration'. He explains at length the problems he faces in this regard, with reference to his family, before turning to Merivale's accounts, and a discussion - with hypothetical examples - of 'the amount of profit which the publisher has a right to expect', again with relation to the 'royalty' and 'half-profit' systems. He does not express an opinion, his desire being to bring the matter 'into the light'. He cites a case in which 'the author had a right to be warned' and remarks: 'I gather from what you say that if you had known as much when you made your first bargaimn as you do now, you would have proceded differently.' He concludes in the hope that 'a few specimens would serve to put authors on their guard, and warn them to prefer a form of agreement which does not leave room for deception: which is manifestly practicable: and though it would leave with the richer party the divine right of having the best of the bargain, would nevertheless make the poorer less helpless and better aware of what he is about'.
