8vo in fours, pp. 40; in modern boards, with calf spine, lettered in gilt. First edition - there appears to be a reprint, in 28pp only, by the same printer in the same year. This pamphlet, replying to Matthew Tindal's Defection Consider'd (December 1717), was attributed to Defoe in Edmund Curll's Memoirs of Tindal (1733). Furban…k & Owens assess the probability of its really being by Defoe as very low, as it is 'incompetent and partisan'; and they suggest that Curll's ascriptions to Defoe are 'distinctly questionable'. Nevertheless, this is not just another of Moore's random twentieth-century attributions, but one made within fifteen years of publication, so it perhaps has a bit more credibility than usual. Appendix with a separate title but continuously paginated. 239pp. A nice copy of this biography of the famous deaf and dumb seer and clairvoyant who attracted a stream of London society to his home for decades in the early 18th century. Supposedly written by Campbel himself, but not. Often, but in our view very doubtfully, attributed to Defoe. More likely written by Eliza Haywood who had earlier published two Duncan Campbel related stories (A Spy Upon the Conjuror in 1724 and The Dumb Projector in 1725) and was a frequent visitor. Some browning and spotting as usual, but a good large copy in late eighteenth-century half calf over marbled boards, spine gilt-ruled with a label; upper joint partly spli…t. On the front pastedown is a small old paper tag with a manuscript note "Bought at W.H. Crawford s Sale at Sotheby s 16.3.91." First and only edition (despite the preliminary notice no "second part" ever appeared), variously attributed to Daniel Defoe and to Thomas Price, with ESTC noting the "attribution to Defoe probably erroneous." The narrator has to leave Oxford University for want of funds and becomes a travelling beggar. He takes up with a mountebank selling quack remedies, and then an itinerant mock-parson; both of them dupe and rob him. He learns to beg from the gentry by sending appeals in verse, and then is taken up by a clergyman in Northamptonshire and ordained a deacon. But the clergyman has a sister: here my Cruel Step-mother, Fortune, begins again to try her Experiments upon me: From this very Instant this poor young Gentlewoman espouses a particular Tenderness and Esteem for me; which she so long unhappily fosters and cherishes in her breast, that at length by degrees it swell d into a violent and passionate Love. And so the mendicant, unwilling to take advantage, sets off again, after more adventures becoming a contented shepherd in Dorset until his own literacy betrays him and he is suspected of being a Jesuit spy. Crawford s was one of the major libraries dispersed in the 1890s; Seymour de Ricci, English Collectors of Books, p. 165, refers to it as "the sale of the great library of manuscripts, incunabula and other rare volumes, formed from 1870 onwards by William Horatio Crawford of Lakelands, County Cork.".

Sometimes attributed to Daniel Defoe, the author of this pamphlet voices strong opinions on the hottest of topics of the day: a possible war with France and the Act of Settlement: "So that if you would make any thing of that late Act of Settlement of… the Crown, besides waste paper." During the "spring and summer of 1701 public opinion crystallized in favour of war against France. The French King's provocations made clear his expansionist aims in Europe and their threat to English interests. The 1701-2 Parliament which like its predecessor lasted for only a single session was largely concerned with the preparations for war, and made rapid progress with necessary measures. But the death of William III on 8 Mar. 1702 halted expectations of a return of the Junto lords to power to manage war as they had done in the 1690s. The accession of his sister-in-law Princess Anne initiated instead a revival of Tory prospects. "At the general election in November and December 1701 contests took place in 91 (34 per cent) of the 269 English and Welsh constituencies. Prolonged attack on the Tories had filled the press for months beforehand, much of it centring on a published 'black list' of MPs who had lately opposed the preparations for war. The widely publicized discovery, too, of three Tory MPs ensconced in a Westminster tavern with the French charge d'affairs Poussin gave Whig propagandists a field day in denouncing as 'Poussineers' those Tories suspected of Jacobite sympathies. But though the Whigs inflicted heavy blows in some constituencies, they did not achieve the overwhelming majority expected. The new House consisted of 248 Whigs and 240 Tories, with a further 24 MPs unclassified. Out of the 515 MPs who sat during this Parliament, 82 (16 per cent) had no previous parliamentary experience, while 91 more had sat in one earlier Parliament. First and only edition: attributed to Defoe along with a previous volume, Annals of King George, year the second, by J.R. Moore. Furbank &…Owens cast doubt on the idea that Defoe could have written either work, writing of this volume that 'one is at a loss to find anything definitely pointing to Defoe at all' - mainly because it is a pro-Government and directly opposed to Mercurius Politicus, with which he was certainly involved. 8vo. 5 x 7 inches. 31 pp. + [1]. Bound in limp buckram, gilt with new endpapers. Some edge water stains but otherwise a good copy. This copy differs slightly from those quoted in ESTC below. It has the imprint date, but not the page misnumbering of N221 and is otherwise identical to T108575, except that the latter has no date in… the imprint (see also T165272 which appears to have no address in the imprint). Although sometimes attributed to Daniel Defoe, it is not included in any of the standard Defoe bibliographies. Certainly he did write anti-Hanoverian pamphlets at this time; an example is Reasons against the Succession of the House of Hannover, 1713, also printed for J. First edition of a dictionary which has been attributed to Daniel Defoe, but there is scant merit in the attribution (not even Moore mentions…it), and one assumes that it was compiled by a Grub Street hack, on behalf of James Knapton, its publisher. Provenance. Signature 'R. Asheton' at head of title; transferred armorial bookplate on the new endpapers of J. Gibson, A.M.; signatures of John Gibson and of George Gibson of Trinity College, Cambridge (presumably the George Gibson, c. 1830-1921, who was there in the 1850s).

Besant dated 1923; pp. [1]-352, with one vignette illustration; occasional spotting, otherwise contents very good. 'First published in 1726, the book is divided into two parts. The first covers the history of the devil from his fall from heaven until the time the book was written, and the second his private conduct during that time. It was one of a trilogy of books Defoe wrote towards the end of his life, that address various occult subjects. Defoe specifically discusses the history and influence of the Archfiend, Satan, and his impact on human history in this book which is also known as ?The political history of the Devil? (Susan Isaac, Royal College of Surgeons of England Library).

A rare broadsheet sometimes attributed to Defoe (although more likely written by his agent in Scotland John Pierce), praising the Lords for their action affirming… the right of freeholders to vote in the Aylesbury election. There is much evidence to associate Pierce with this pamphlet, and he may well have been the author, though it is possible that he and Defoe collaborated on it. Moore 74 describes a 4-page printing of this address, but notes there is a "copy with 2 unnumbered pages" at Indiana University. This copy would seem to conform to that at Indiana. "There can be no doubt that [Defoe] was deeply involved in it, in conjunction with.John Pierce.the weight of evidence is in favour of Pierce, rather than Defoe, as the actual author" (ESTC citing Furbank and Owens, Defoe de-attributions). ESTC locates 8 copies, Lilly, UC-Riverside, and Yale only in the U.S.
