Paperback. Condition: Good. THERE ARE NO TARIFFS OR CUSTOMS DUTIES ON BOOKS. "Defoe's "Tour Through the Whole island of Great Britain", first published in three volumes in 1724-26, is an account of 13 "circuits or journies" made by the renowned author of such books as "Robinson Crusoe" and "Moll Flanders". This abridged edition is also the first illustrated version. Defoe's famous text is now complemented by contemporary paintings, sketches, and engravings of places he visited, industrial processes, activities and events he described, and people he knew. Many of these illustrations are little known, and some have never before been reproduced. Defoe's "Tour" has been the most often-quoted source for early 18th century British social and economic history. It is also a very personal book, conveying a sense of "the romance of trade" as felt by an enthusiast at a time of rapid commercial expansion. Different from earlier (largely antiquarian) descriptions of Great Britain, it is based on more first hand knowledge, is better organized, and is written in a vigorous and subtly amusing style. An introduction to this edition outlines Defoe's life, locates the "Tour" among his other works, and reveals the extent of his involvement in the life of early 18th century Britain. Notes to the text and captions to the illustrations explain contemporary technical and industrial processes and historical allusions, identify people, and provide information on buildings and places" (publisher blurb). Large format.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A scarce first edition of this early Japanese translation of "Robinson Crusoe". Defoe's novel experienced great popularity in the Meiji period, and many different editions of it were published. Illustrated first editions such as this, however, are now quite difficult to find. The translator, Inoue Tsutomu, famous for writing some of the first Japanese translations of influential texts by figures like Shakespeare, Thomas More, and Jules Verne, "treated Crusoe as a fictional character, not as an actual person, but he also asserted that the novel was no mere adventure story and that it served to teach young Englishmen to overcome hardship" ("Modern Japanese thought", Wakabayashi, 1998). An early translation of the classic novel by one of the most prominent Japanese translators of the 1880s. Boards covered with paper by an ex-owner. Boards and spine a little worn, corners bumped. Washi repairs to board gutters. Browning, ex-bookseller sticker and stamps to endpapers. Discolouration and occasional small marks to text. Light pencil notes to preface. Loss to margin of one illustrated plate (not affecting illustration). Overall very good. 1 v., complete. 10, 410 p. 19.7 x 13.8 cm. Text in Japanese.
