Reprint, stapled. Condition: Gut. pp. 11-21. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With author's dedication. - Author's name and source handwritten on cover,m otherwise good and clean. - From the text: Throughout the life ofjane Austen, the worlds political situation was in flux. The Napoleonic Wars ravaged the face of Europe as old regimes were toppled by new orders. But when we read her novels, it seems that she remained untouched by the forces buffeting the world: she maintained a strict silence about the political and military events of her age. However subtly they may have influenced her work, the Napoleonic Wars and discussion of the slave-trade are barely allowed to intrude into her fiction. To explain her refusal to deal with these topics directly, some scholars have argued that she considered the world of politics above her head, others that she lelt if beneath her notice. Nobody has yet noticed, however, that Jane Austens refusal to write on historical themes has a literary precedent in ancient Rome. Like Jane Austen, the Roman lovepoets eschewed political and military themes and focussed instead on the private loves of unimportant people. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With author's dedication. - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise good and clean. - From the text: FIRST PUBLISHED IN 1908, Kenneth Grahames masterpiece, The Wind in the Willows, has appealed to readers of all ages. The child who hears the story enters its cozy river world with its pleasant inhabitants, Mole, Ratty, and Badger. In counterpoint to the peaceful charm of this world are set the lunatic adventures of Toad, who has successfully shaken off the trammels of responsible behavior. The adult who reads to the child gets a more subtle enjoyment because the pattern of the story follows that of one of the most venerable pieces of literature, the Odyssey. Under the mottled skin of the Toad can be discerned the features of Ulysses. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

Small strip of back panel has lightly browned. ; The "Argonautica" was said to have been the source of a quarrel between Apollonius, who wrote what looks like an epic poem, and Callimachus, who denounced the writing of epic poetry. Although the quarrel did not take place in the real world, its issue controls the poem. The heroes are determined to take part in a Homeric epic, which the Callimachean narrator refuses to write. Drawing on the methods of modern literary theorists but eschewing the jargon, DeForest shows how Apollonius uses the literary dispute in Alexandria to give a three-dimensional quality to his poem. The amusing conflict between heroes and narrator turns serious when the levels of narrative split apart and Medea steps into the gap as a free-standing figure, the forerunner of powerful women in fiction. ; Mnemosyne, Bibliotheca Classica Batava Supplementum; 160 pages.
