Richly illustrated art journal, published near the end of the first Five-Year Plan, this is one of the last attempts to recover the art of the revolution and experimental era, which would yield to the dominance of Socialist Realism. This copy has a few light stamps, 2cm. bottom trim; interior tight and clean.

Pp. 600, qt., ill.This is a full biography and artistic record of Deineka (1899-1969), the quintessential socialist realistic artist: his workers were ideal physical specimens, hard at work, his soldiers were heroes, ready to sacrifice themselves; his women -- he obviously liked portraying women -- were attractive, at the same time strong, active in sports (with skimpy costumes), of ample hips, ready to bear children for the future of the socialist society; his children were active in sports, preparing their bodies to serve the needs of society. Spoiler: in the 1960s, I happened to meet Deineka's sturdy "Tractor Driver," 1956 (vol. 1, #179), who was in fact a fellow artist, who had never been near a tractor.
