Richly illustrated art journal, published near the end of the first Five-Year Plan, this is one of the last attempts to recover the art of the revolution and experimental era, which would yield to the dominance of Socialist Realism. This copy has a few light stamps, 2cm. bottom trim; interior tight and clean.

Second edition, 8vo (22.1 x 19.2 cm); illustrations throughout by Deineka in colour, some full-page; original printed wrappers, 'printed in Russia' stamp to upper cover, a very good copy. Deineka was a master of Soviet agit-prop art during Stalin's Five Year Plan. He adroitly straddled the line between the Russian avant-garde and Social Realism. He was a prolific illustrator of children's books and Eletromonter, in its treatment of the average electrician as a Socialist hero, may well be his most important work in this field.

DEINEKA, Z. URSS en Construction. La Republique Sovietique de Tchouvachie. (1936 #9). 36 pp. Folio, bound in original wrappers. Moscow: Editions d'Etat des Beaux-Arts, 1936. A fine copy of one of many monographic issues of this landmark periodical, devoted to Tchouvachia. As Martin Parr says "from 1930-1940 URSS en Construction employed the best Soviet photo-journalists and graphic designers. Amongst the photographers were Max Alpert, Arkadi Shaikhet, Georgi Zeima, Boris Ignatovich, Semen Fridland and Georgi Shaikhet. Designers included Nikolai Troshin, El Lissitzky, Sophie Kueppers, Aleksandr Rodchenko and Varvara Stepanova. All the visual strategies of the propaganda photobooks, designed by Lissitzky, Rodchenko and others -- the elaborate photomontages, innovative photography, fold-out pages, transparent overlays and so on -- were developed in URSS en Construction, one of the most beautifully produced magazines of the twentieth century." Pp. 600, qt., ill.This is a full biography and artistic record of Deineka (1899-1969), the quintessential socialist realistic artist: his workers were ideal physical specimens, hard at work, his soldiers were heroes, ready to sacrifice themselves; his women -- he obviously liked portraying women -- were attractive, at the same time strong, active in sports (with skimpy costumes), of ample hips, ready to bear children for the future of the socialist society; his children were active in sports, preparing their bodies to serve the needs of society. Spoiler: in the 1960s, I happened to meet Deineka's sturdy "Tractor Driver," 1956 (vol. 1, #179), who was in fact a fellow artist, who had never been near a tractor. Paintings, sketches, drawings, mosaics (esp. for the Maiakovskii Metro Station, Moscow), photographs; writings. Profusely illustrated; illustrations are integrated with the text. Sprache: Russisch, Typische zweifarbige Illustrationsarbeit von oder im Stile von Deineka. - Der berühmte Roman war 1925 erstmals in einer Zeitung erschienen und kam in Buchform 1926 heraus. Die Datierung des Andrucks bezieht sich auf ein Exemplar in der Library of Congress in gleicher Größe, allerdings ist bei dem Babanin nicht mit angegeben. - Eckknickfalte, Randeinriß und zwei Randfehlstellen an den Druckermarken, insgesamt jedoch frisch erhalten.
