Bound in contemporary full calf with richly gilt spines and all edges red. Titlepages printed in black and red. Spines and edges with light wear and scuff marks. Volume 7 with small loss (2x20mm) of binding to upper spine end and small loss of material to surface of rear board (5x15mm). Mild foxing to pastedown and outermost few pages. Small burn marks to last three leaves of vol. 8. * The Comte d'Estrade was in the service of King Louis XIV from an early age (as a page) and continued to hold fine positions throughout his life. His career in foreign diplomacy started with a mission to Holland aged 19. During his span as a international networker he negociated the restitution of Dunkirk, the Treaty of Breda (1667) and the Treaty of Nijmwegen, while also travelling with the King. **Originally published in 1709, in an edition of five volumes. The present 1743 edition is the first to include all 9 volumes.
