The section on Jack the Ripper comprised approximately one-third of the book (pp.85-163 incl). Dew offers a lengthy overview of the case from Emma Smith to Frances Coles. He includes his own personal recollections of various scenes, including the arrest of "Squibby" and his initial reactions to the Mary Kelly crime scene. This copy has a small stain mark that is on front cover and first two prelim pages.

This copy is from the crime library of Patricia Cornwell, whose books Portrait of a Killer: Jack the Ripper - Case Closed (2002) and Ripper: The Secret Life of Walter Sickert (2017) investigated the identify of the murderer. "The worldwide press coverage of the Crippen case made Dew possibly the most famous detective in the world and he embraced the celebrity status that remained with him for the rest of his life" (ODNB). A police officer since 1882, Dew also claimed to know Mary Jane Kelly, the Ripper's last victim. Octavo. Portrait frontispiece of author, 2 plates.
