Also published as a cream colored softcover edition, this is the HARDCOVER edition of the second revised and enlarged edition, published on the 25th anniversary of the 1955 original. 'The books described here were selected by Bern Dibner from a large collection of scientific and technical works assembled by him over a period of nearly fifty years, as representative of landmarks in the history of science and technology. They are part of about 10,000 books which he presented in 1976 to the Smithsonian Institition, with a few to the establishment of a national center for research in these fields.' (from the original introduction) Here printed with minor modifications from the original, 'It continues to be among the two or three most-quoted references of description in antiquarian booksellers catalogs around the world.' (from the 1980 preface). Still often quoted today, it is a useful reference for dealer, collector, and institution.
