    Large watercolour and bodycolour painting depicting a lion crouching on a riverbank drinking from the water at dusk. 32.5 x 55cm. Signed to the foot at the left "Herbert Dicksee". Contained in a modern blue and gilt wood frame (55.5 x 76cm in total), the glazing has previously been removed but can be easily replaced by a professional framer (we have left the painting unglazed at present for ease of shipping). Original exhibition label affixed to the reverse of the frame for the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours with the title, artist's name, address, and price completed in ink: "Drinking Lion / Herbert Dicksee / 7 Kidderpore Avenue NW3 / £31 10. 0.". The painting remains in excellent clean condition, the colours remaining bright and fresh. The frame is in very good order. A large, striking and typically atmospheric watercolour by the English animal artist Herbert Thomas Dicksee (1862-1942), forming a sensitive depiction of one his most popular subjects, the African lion. Belonging to an illustrious artistic family, Dicksee initially studied at the Slade School of Art under Alphonse Legros, first exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1885. Best known for his perceptive, sympathetic depictions of animals, particularly dogs, which were popularised through his mastery of the art of etching, Dicksee was also famous for his powerful, lifelike paintings of big cats, of which he was a great admirer and skilled interpreter. Dicksee spent a significant amount of time at London Zoo observing the lions, tigers and other big cats, honing his understanding of their form, behaviours and characters. As a 1906 article in the Windsor Magazine records, Dicksee would "rise at 6 o'clock in the morning to visit the Zoological Gardens before visitors could arrive and obstruct his view. There he would be seen, morning after morning, making sketches of the lions and tigers in the reposeful intervals of their restless movements." Two Panthers is an evocative work that captures an intimate moment between two reclining panthers who face each other by the foot of a tree. Suffused throughout the scene is a sense of intense emotional and psychic energy, which originates from the pair of animals and spread outward to their surroundings. One panther wears an expression of open yearning as it gazes at the other; both are nestled in relaxed poses, with loosely curled tails. The wild and rapid black charcoal marks that fill the composition, combined with a subtle overlay of white in select areas, give the work an impressionistic quality, and serve as rare traces of the artist's hand. They also add rich texture and dimensionality to the panthers' musculature and patterned coats. Herbert T. Dicksee, the English painter, etcher and mezzotint engraver, became known particularly for his portrayal of animal subjects, namely lions and dogs. His works were executed primarily from life, and he kept many pets for inspiration. Prints and etchings of his best-known paintings were widely distributed by publishers such as Klackner of London, and his work is popular today among collectors and animal enthusiasts. He came from a family of creatives. His father was the artist John Robert Dicksee (1817-1905). John's brother Thomas Francis (1819-1895), also a painter, was the father of Sir Frank Dicksee (1853-1928), president of the Royal Academy from 1924 until his death and Margaret Isabel Dicksee, also a painter. Herbert Thomas studied art at the Slade School, where he won medals for painting and drawing from life and also the Slade Scholarship. In 1885 he exhibited at the Royal Academy and was also elected to be a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers (R.E.). This glorious view is drawn from a work by J. W. C. Williams (American, 19th century), and looks towards lower Manhattan from the perspective of Brooklyn Heights. It foregrounds the pleasing turquoise and lapis water of the East river, which is populated by sailing ships as well as a few paddle steamers--an indication of New York's burgeoning stature as an industrial port city in the mid-19th century. This composition encompasses numerous famous landmarks that remain key sites of New York life today, including The Battery, South Ferry, Saint Paul's Church, Governor's Island, and Staten Island. The land of New York was discovered in 1524, and colonized by the Dutch in 1624, when it was named New Amsterdam and became a trading port of the Dutch West India Company. In 1664 this Dutch colony was surrendered to British forces and was renamed New York after James Duke of York (1633-1701), who had been granted the land by his brother King Charles II. Within fifteen years of this present view, New York would become one of the most important cities in the new nation.
