Und welche Bedeutung hat sein Werk, das in der Münchner Neuen Pinakothek in einem eigenen Saal (Nr. 15) ausgestellt wird, für einen zeitgenössischen Künstler wie Olaf Metzel (*1952)? Zunächst war die Annäherung durch eine Doppelausstellung auf Metzels Anregung hin erfolgt, suchte der Bildhauer doch gezielt die Auseinandersetzung, weil im neoidealistischen Ansatz der Deutsch-Römer, zu denen von Marées zählt, ein Teil jener viel beschworenen Europa-Visionen angelegt ist, die heute aus politisch entgegengesetzten Richtungen so stark angefeindet werden.
