Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a play from the early 1800s which follows the intertwining stories of two sets of lovers. In a small French village, Vernon, a successful lawyer, has brought his sister Nina to find a husband. At the same inn, Desroches and Dorval, who have arrived with their own romantic entanglements, find themselves drawn into Vernon and Nina's affairs. The play explores the themes of love, marriage, and the clash between the values of the city and the countryside. The author humorously portrays the characters' romantic misadventures. It remains a clever and entertaining commentary on the complexities of human relationships. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Add to basketA short letter discussing the upcoming publication of an unnamed novel in the Nouvelle Revue. The novel in question is Frère Pélage, published in December 1893. It concerns a woman who assumes a male identity to avoid marriage and pursue a spiritual life in a monastery. Dieulafoy herself at times wore male attire to enable her professional life. Jane Dieulafoy (1851-1916) worked as archaeologist and an author. She first donned male clothing in 1870, when she dressed as a soldier to accompany her husband Marcel to the Franco-Prussian War. In the 1880s, the couple discovered an interest in archaeology and together excavated sections of the ancient Persian city of Susa; several artefacts that they uncovered now reside in the Louvre. They later travelled in Morocco and Spain. Whilst abroad, Dieulafoy recommenced dressing as a man to enable her to work unencumbered by restrictions on women's activities. She continued the practice upon her return to France, as it increased the time she had available for writing. Notecard (153 x 88 mm), written in black ink on recto and verso. Mounted on green card with printed caption, blue ink borders. Former vertical crease to notecard. In very good condition.…
