Following earlier schemes/plans that were viewed as too optimistic and encountered considerable opposition from landowners, the press and members of the public. This prospectus of the Grand Eastern Counties Railway was produced in 1834 by John Braithwaite. Subsequently a bill was introduced into the House of Commons in February 1836, and after some difficulty involving rival schemes and continuing opposition from land owners, it was finally authorised by Act of Parliament in July 1836.
