Many of the geological formations of the area were first identified by the author, pioneering an understanding of the region's geological history. The author describes the South Mountains as the easternmost section of a vast geological region of gneissic rock that once lay under a thick layer of limestone and shale that gradually eroded away, exposing the gneiss in irregular patches. In addition to a detailed discussion of the region's geology, the book includes a detailed topographical index map of the area. This book will be of interest to geologists and historians of the region. This book explores the Pocono Formation, a geological formation that dominated the landscape of what is now Pennsylvania during a significant era of Earth's history. The author provides an overview of the formation's geography, composition, and significance for understanding geological epochs and their transitions. As the lowest sub-division of the Carboniferous System, the Pocono Formation provides important insights into the transition from shallow marine environments to terrestrial habitats.
