Sixty-six gelatin silver print photographs relating to refugees residing in Lübeck in 1946, following the Second World War. The largest measuring 17 x 13cm, with some smaller. All uncaptioned but with a contemporary envelope bearing a British military government stamp dated 18th July 1946 and reference "512 P DET" and additional manuscript tag "508 DET LÜBECK". Condition is very good indeed. An unusual group of photographs, apparently originating from the British administration in Germany during the immediate post-war period, depicting the experiences of refugees from the former eastern territories of Germany, annexed by Poland and the Soviet Union following the end of the war, displaced and now residing in Lübeck. The result of Germany's eastern border being redrawn was a mass influx of displaced persons, predominantly into Schleswig-Holstein, causing an economic and humanitarian crisis which formed one of the biggest difficulties faced by Germany during the early post-war period, and which was brought to an end only by the Wirtschaftswunder (economic miracle) of the 1950s. The present photographs form an important insight into the plight of those displaced, predominantly depicting poignant moments of arrival and departure.

Card Covers. First Edition, First Printing. pp. [1-6], 7-72. 8vo., measuring 5.75" x 8". Plain card covers with black lettering and borders to the front cover, decorated with a floral motif to the centre. Black-and-white photograph frontispiece offering a view of the "Mountain Hunters' barracks", a DP camp located along the banks of the Isar river, which, at its height, would provide refuge to over 3000 Ukrainians, displaced as a consequence of hostilities over the course of the Second World War. A remarkable primary-source document providing valuable insight into the state of Ukrainians as they struggled to exist in the immediate aftermath of World War II. Indeed, it provides an outline of the camp's history since its inception, and a rich account of the activities which took place within its confines, including its structure and organization, a demographic breakdown of the various nationalities initially present therein (Italians, Lithuanian, Ukrainian, Latvians, Esthonians (sp), et al.), of its cultural and religious activities, the various vocational opportunities available (bookbinding, shoemaking, tailor and ceramic workshop, etc.) and an accounting of the relevant facilities to accommodate such learning, details of its surprisingly robust educational facilities (featuring an elementary school, realgymnasium, teacher's seminary, commercial high school, music school, a Ukrainian popular university, et al.). Richly illustrated with many captioned (in English, and German) black-and-white photographs capturing views of various camp structures such as its entrance portal, the local Ukrainian Catholic church, monuments and tombs erected to commemorate the Unknown Soldier, of men and women working and training in various vocational facilities (locksmiths, ceramics, cobblers, tailors, carvers, laundry services, barbers, mechanics, and many more), photographs of Ukrainian women partaking in traditional embroidery and knitting, of camp gatherings, and much else. Superficial abrasion to the upper-left margin of the front cover, neat ink period ink inscription to verso of front cover, single, unobtrusive, institutional stamp to the lower margin of the cover and title page. Text-block entirely without blemish with firm, stapled binding; very good+. Rare to be offered in commerce. Our offering being the only extant copy available at time of cataloguing. Not found in in LAC/BAC, Peel, Fisher, BL, et al. Rare indeed. Text printed in English, and German. See Boshyk & Balan, p. 350: ["Political Refugees and "Displaced Persons,", 1945-1954. A Selected Bibliography and Guide to Research with Special Reference to the Ukrainians"]. See also OCLC Nos. #77329596 & #750190 indicating only but five institutional holdings (Illinois, Indiana, Washington, LoC, Hougthon).

Original ink and watercolour measuring 310 by 360mm. At sea, USAT General W.M. Black, A rare survival: though comic in execution, this image provide a rare glimpse of life on board US Army Transport General W.M. Black, one of several ships involved in the settling of displaced persons from Europe to the Americas in the immediate aftermath of World War II. Over a four year period, forty ships made 150 separate trips from Bremerhaven, which served as the embarkation point for all transports of displaced persons, who had otherwise been held in camps run by the International Relief Organization.   Writing in preface of the final report of the United States Displaced Persons Commission, the contributor describes the optimism of the project: "From the sordid and spirit-crushing atmosphere of the displaced persons camps and refugee centers came men and women of diverse faiths and national backgrounds to find a new life and a new hope ." Indeed, to get a sense of the variety of passengers travelling on these ships, here is a breakdown of those who travelled on the USAT General W.M. Black to New York on 21 October the same year: "338 Poles, 168 Lithuanians, 53 Czechs, 32 Latvians, 17 Ukrainians, 6 Hungarians, and 83 who were listed as stateless" (ibid, 64) They were predominantly farmers but over 60 different types of occupations (or skills) were listed.   The artist depicts carnival atmosphere on board. Starting on the left, a game of cards takes place, the players serenaded by an accordionist, two people suffering sea-sickness, there are dogs, a sunbather, two romantic couples, a kindly sailor gives children food, two men fight, and there is self-portrait of the artist in his painter's smock, suggesting he was a passenger rather than crew.   General W.M. Black, a C4 type troopship, was busy from the moment she was launched. Her first trip was in March 1944, transporting 3500 troops to Pearl Harbor. This was followed with others to Noumea, Guadalcanal, the Panama Canal, New Orleans, Kingston and Guantanamo Bay. She was decommissioned in 1946 and, having undergone some alterations, returned to service as an army transport. She made her first trip from Bremerhaven in February 1948 and made some six round trips taking displaced persons and refugees to Venezuela, Melbourne (Australia), Rio de Janeiro, and New York. As titled, her fifth such trip was to Valparaiso.   Displaced Persons Commission, The DP Story: The Final Report of the United States Displaced Persons Commission. Washington, 1952.

(UKRAINIAN ART). (DISPLACED PERSONS). Ukrainian Formative Art in the Exhibition-Hall Regensburg. (Regensburg: GG. Aumüller & Sohn, 1948) [16] leaves. (172 x 137 mm.) Original printed wrappers, upper wrapper with tipped-on black & white photographic reproduction. With nine tipped-in black & white photographic reproductions. A couple pencil notes on cover and first leaf. Wrappers and paper a little toned, very minor foxing and thumb soiling to upper wrapper. About fine. A scarce exhibition catalogue of art produced by Ukrainian artists living in Displaced Persons camps in postwar Germany. In the aftermath of the Second World War, one to two million people were housed in makeshift Displaced Person (DP) camps across Western Europe. An estimated 200,000 were of Ukrainian nationality, most of whom had either been forced into labor under the Nazis, or were fleeing Soviet rule. Despite the difficult conditions of camp life, including unsanitary conditions, lack of supplies, and uncertainty about the future, artists continued to produce creative work and even staged exhibitions of their art as early as 1945. The present exhibition held in Regensburg (the location of one of the largest Ukrainian DP camps in Europe) was staged by the Union of Ukrainian Formative Artists, a kind of umbrella organization directing the various Ukrainian artists' groups formed in DP camps and emigrant communities. The titles and photographic reproductions included here demonstrate a variety of artistic styles and themes, but all evoke a deep longing for the homeland. According to the preface to this catalogue, "The work of the Ukrainian artists is generally characterized by the endeavour to bring about a synthesis of rich tradition on the one side and of the new tendencies of the West"; however, this freedom is exclusively enjoyed by those living outside of Ukraine, where "only the so-called 'Social-Realism' is permitted to be cultivated." OCLC finds fewer than 10 copies of this work, just four of which are in US institutions. (1046) Further reading: Isajiw, Boshyk, and Senkus (eds.), "The Refugee Experience: Ukranian Displaced Persons after World War II.".
