Den Besuch in Japan betrachtet der Österreicher als Höhepunkt seiner Reise. Erst wenige Jahre zuvor hatte das Land sich geöffnet und in der Folge der Meiji-Restauration dem Westen zugewandt. Er muss feststellen, dass die romantisierende Darstellung Japans auf der Weltausstellung in Wien wenig gemein hat mit der Realität im Land der aufgehenden Sonne.
