Boards have moderate shelf wear, with rubbing and marking. Heavy bumping to corners and crushing to spine ends, causing cloth to fray. Book has noticeable forward lean, with heavy tanning overall.

Smaller, sturdy book, orante gilt flowery design to all of spine and nearby sides, smooth ivory-colored boards with beautiful pattern of violets, all edges bright gilt, pattern inside covers and adjacent end papers, 268 pages. Very slight surface wear to tips, lightly browned stain at top front, nick at spine top edge. Near Very Good. 0.

Excerpts, passages and quotations from most of Shakespeare's plays (excluding Merry Wives of Windsor), organized by Comedies, Historical Plays and Tragedies. Excerpts are in chronological order within each play, with given titles commenting on their subject matter and providing some commentary (e.g. "Lady Percy's Pathetic Speech to her Husband," "Anger," "Harmless Innocence," etc.). Index at back. Signatures of previous owners on inside cover and front flyleaf in ink. Good condition: front cover detached but present; foxed.

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Dodd's 'Beauties of Shakspeare' is an 18th-century anthology of excerpts from William Shakespeare's plays, compiled by the English clergyman and writer William Dodd. Originally published in 1752, the work was a popular collection intended to make Shakespeare's most notable passages and quotations more accessible to the public. Illustrations by Sir John Gilbert, Birket Foster and others. 1879 Cover worn with bumping to spine edges and corners of boards. Back hinge beginning to break. Former owner's name in ink on front free endpaper. Pages foxed with occasional small marks but otherwise in clean sound condition.

Pp.380; extra-engraved title with vignette & frontispiece by Heath after Corbould; lightly spotted; a very good copy of this attractive gift book edition in apt contemporary full crimson morocco, elaborately blocked in blind, lettered in gold, all edges gilt & gauffred; slightly rubbed at edges.
