Publiée mensuellement entre mai 1897 et avril 1899, L'estampe moderne fut fondée par l'éditeur Henri Piazza et par Charles Masson, futur directeur du musée de Luxembourg. Accompagnés de l'imprimeur Champenois, ces messieurs se donnèrent pour but de rendre accessible à tous l'art de l'estampe. Chaque livraison (il y en aura 24 au total) comportait 4 chromolithographies originales de format 31 x 41 cm, ornées en marge du timbre sec de la revue (Lugt L.2790), soit un total de 100 estampes, incluant celles offertes en prime aux abonnés, pour un tirage limité à 2000 exemplaires en édition courante sur vélin et 150 épreuves sur papier Japon.
