Bis zur Komposition des 'Elias', der die Geschichte des biblischen Propheten aus dem 1. Buch der Könige zum Thema hat, sollte jedoch noch ein ganzes Jahrzehnt verstreichen. Als ihn das Angebot erreichte, für das Musikfestival in Birmingham ein größeres Werk zu schreiben, begann Mendelssohn schließlich mit der Arbeit am Oratorium. Dort wurde der 'Elias' 1846 mit großem Erfolg uraufgeführt und erfreut sich seitdem ungebrochener Beliebtheit.Im Anschluss an die Uraufführung unterzog Mendelssohn das Oratorium einer Überarbeitung, bei der ganze Nummern entfielen und neue hinzukamen. In dieser Fassung, in der das Werk auch heute gespielt wird, erklang der 'Elias' erstmals 1847 in London.
