Add to basketFirst edition in the publisher's "Eversley Series" in an attractive binding by T. J. Cobden-Sanderson at his Doves Bindery. Tidcombe identifies this binding as pattern 463, and first used for the three volume edition of Arnold's Poems in December 1896. The volumes bear the bookplate of legal author Francis Beaufort Palmer (1845-1917). Described as "a noted company lawyer", his obituary in The Times stated "there was not a set of barristers' chambers or a solicitor's office in England in which his famous books were not to be found; and in Lincoln's Inn, where he had practised for many years, he was known as a draftsman without rival". A member of the Burlington Fine Arts club, he collected "many rare works of art, including a collection of old tapestry and Tanagra ware". Tidcombe 295. The Times, 16 June 1917, p. 9. 3 vols, octavo (175 x 116 mm). Contemporary crushed green levant by the Doves Bindery (signed on rear turn-ins and dated 1897), spines lettered and decorated with flower, oak leaf and dot design, five raised bands, covers with single rule and dot border in gilt, turn-ins with triple rules and floral cornerpieces in gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt gauffered edges. Armorial bookplates on front pastedowns of each volume. Minor loss to head of spines of vol 2 and 3, joints of vol 2 a little worn, restoration to joints of vol 3, some colour variance, occasional marks to edges, extremities rubbed in places, minor creasing to top corner of leaves in vol 3: a very good set.
