Structuralist theory, while not endorsing this view directly, lends support to it by making the concept of structure-the idea of a principled, self-regulated system-a fundamental attribute of culture. Structural anthropology has drawn heavily on structural linguistics, so that the structure of culture is often likened through a linguistic analogy to the structure of language. Recent work on creole languages, however, questions the correctness of earlier linguistic theory and suggests that internal variation and change, rather than uniformity and synchronicity, are distinctive features of language. This article draws on some of that work to argue that cultures are neither structures nor plural amalgams, but a continuum or set of inter systems. The cultural continuum, like the linguistic continuum, is particularly evident in polyethnic societies, but it is present in all societies. The usefulness of a continuum model is tested in an ethnographic study of symbolic processes associated with ethnic categorization in Guyana.
