'An influential figure in the development of aesthetics, Du Bos [16701742] acted as a French diplomat before devoting himself to history (Histoire critique de l'établissement de la monarchie française dans les Gaules, 1734) and to discussions of the arts. His major work, the Réflexions critiques sur la poésies et la peinture (1719), locates the enjoyment of art in feeling rather than reason, explaining the appeal of tragedy by the pleasure of experiencing strong emotion in safety. The power of poetry resides not in its ability to instruct, but in the way poetic language affects the senses, the imagination, and the passions. Painting, with its direct representation of objects, is even more affecting. And since pleasure is the criterion of judgement, public taste is a more reliable guide than the experts' (New Oxford Companion to Literature in French). The work 'influenced almost all eighteenth-century contributors to aesthetics' (SEP), including Diderot, d'Alembert, James Harris, Herder, Hume, Lessing, Moses Mendelssohn, Rousseau, Voltaire, and Winckelmann, almost all of whom Coleridge later read, was influenced by, or reacted against. This is the last edition that Du Bos edited himself and is therefore regarded as the definitive and authoritative edition that should be referred to when citing this work (Stanford). First published in 1719, the Réflexions critiques sur la poésie et la peinture exercised a considerable influence on the development of art and music throughout the Age of Enlightenment. It marks the foundation of a new aesthetic of perception, based on feeling. Du Bos, deeply influenced by his friend John Locke, states that art cannot only be beautiful, but must also move hearts: "Le sublime de la poésie et de la peinture est de toucher et de plaire". Du Bos thus became a founder of sensibility, at a time of Cartesian rationalism. The impact of the text was considerable. It was highly praised by Voltaire in a number of his writings and formed the basis of the fine arts sections of Diderot and d'Alembert's Encyclopaedia. A generation later, Jean-Jacques Rousseau would radicalize the principles of Du Bos. Condition: bindings slightly rubbed, otherwise in very good condition.
