Priest is prosecuted for issuing a written challenge, with Wright charged for carrying it, in a period when the Star Chamber sought to suppress the culture of duelling. The proceedings reveal the Crowns determination to curb private honourâ'fights and the legal machinery used to discipline those who encouraged them. 5 PAGES, printed in double columns. A genuine 1781 printing taken from the authoritative Complete Collection of State Trials. Originally compiled to serve both as a legal reference and a vehicle of political discourse, the State Trials series shaped contemporary and subsequent understanding of justice, authority, and dissent. The generously sized sheets on which these trials are printed offer particular pleasure to the eye and hand, bearing clear signs of their handmade origin: chain lines and wire impressions from the mould are readily visible, some pages display watermarks, and the paper varies subtly in thickness, all characteristic of 18th century rag paper. This particular trial report has been preserved in a modern card cover, prepared for practicality - an unassuming but serviceable presentation that favours function over finery. Size: 30 x 47 cms. Historiated woodcut initials of various sizes, ornamental woodcut head- and tail-pieces. Elaborate large version of printer's device on title. Contemporary limp vellum. An influential polemic questioning the morality of the fashionable 16th century Italian concept of upholding a gentleman's code of honour by means of challenging or accepting to fight a duel as a proper method of settling disputes. Susio (1519-83), a physician from Mirandola, strongly opposed the practice as unjust and condemned all forms of duelling, whereas Possevino and Muzio had staunchly defended the principle. In his preface, to Count Fulvio Rangoni, dated 19 January 1555, the author states that he had first debated the subject in Venice ten years earlier and then in Rome; he also mentions Antonio Massa's 'Contra l'uso del duello' (Venice 1555) in support of his arguments. Here in its second edition, the book was first published by Giolito in 1555. The first of the three parts is dedicated to Henri II of France. An attracted copy with wide margins; minimal traces of usage; author's name and title inked on top foredge as customary at the time. Add to basketFirst edition of this account of the duel between Baron Mohun and the Duke of Hamilton, in which both men died. Though ostensibly fought over a disputed inheritance, the duel between the prominent Whig Mohun and the Tory Hamilton, the latter the Ambassador to France, had political overtones and caused a sensation. The Tories presented the duel as a Whig plot to derail peace with France, aided by the fact that Mohun's second fled to Hanover, while Hamilton's second turned himself in and was able to shape the narrative. The violence of the duel, fought with swords, led to a public outcry. Queen Anne spoke against duelling a few months later, and the practice declined in Britain. Increasingly, duels were fought with pistols and without seconds. The pamphlet's sympathies are with Hamilton, devoting two pages to praising his life and character and describing him as a "Prince of unquestionable bravery" who is "universally lamented". Mohun's virtues are reduced to a single telling sentence: "Lord Mohun is also very much lamented, as being the last male of his family". Addressed to a member of Parliament, the pamphlet beseeches the legislature to end the practice of duelling, holding that the events will change the mind of the parliamentarians who had formerly turned a blind eye to the practice. Add to basket4to, pp.[iv], 16; woodcut vignette to title-page, woodcut initials, woodcut and typographic headpieces; some fading to text on p.[iii], lightly toned, else a good copy; disbound.Seemingly unrecorded edition, one of two published in the same year with no precedence established, of Bernard de la Monnoye's poem on the abolition of duelling, the first poem to be awarded a prize by the Académie Française, highly esteemed by both Perrault and Voltaire. 1671 was the first year of the Académie Française's poetry prize, judged by Guez de Balzac, which de la Monnoye would go on to win another four times; it was thought that he was asked to refrain from entering to give other poets a fair chance. The text of de la Monnoye's 'Le Duel aboly', praising LouisXIV and describing the horrific consequences of duelling, had appeared in Etienne Girard's Discours de la louange et de la gloire, also printed in 1671, along with the subsequent poems 'Sur les Duels', 'Ode pour le Roy sur la defence des Duels', and 'Sur la Navigation et le commerce', all of which also appear here, with no precedence established; 'Le Duel aboly' was also included in Pellisson's Relation contenant l'histoire de l'Académie françoise the following year. This edition, according to the publisher's preface, was printed soon after the Academy's competition to satisfy 'the desire of the whole world and the curiosity of the public, and my efforts have at last been rewarded through the help of an illustrious person to whom the public and I are already indebted. I could have, through his influence, included seven works initially selected by the Academy and brought to Court, but as one of these has been published by the author himself, and it is said that another is said to appear under the name of its author, I have limited myself to the four poems presented here' (trans.). The printer and bookseller Claude Barbin (c.16281698) was notably the publisher of several epistolary novels, as well as works by Perrault, Racine, La Fontaine, Corneille, and Molière, and had previously apprenticed with EstienneII Richer, publisher of the Mercure. Barbin was constantly in search of larger premises and relocated frequently, here operating 'at the second step of the Sainte-Chapelle'. We find no copies on OCLC, Library Hub, or CCfr. ADS. 2pg. 4 x 7 . June 28 1808. No place. An autograph document signed Charles W A Morton to Mr. Biggs: As Mr. Biggs has declined to act any longer in the capacity of second, Mr. Morton wishes to know, if Mr. Thompson has come to a definitive resolution upon the subject. Saturday was the day appointed for the encounter, and Mr. M is certainly entitled to the intermediate time for the purpose of providing his second, especially since the arrangements necessary to be made by a person acting in that relation, may be completed in a few hours. Mr. M. has been involved in a disagreeable predicament by the defection of him, who had originally undertaken his cause, and has hitherto been unsuccessful under the circumstances. Mr. M. relying on the honor and ability of Mr. B is willing, that he should act as the common friend on the occasion, and he conceived that his opponent cannot occur any possible disadvantage in consequence of the measure, and that his reputation requires an acquiescence in the proposal. If Mr. B absolutely declines, he is still ready to go out alone with Mr. T in the last resort, in pursuance of preliminary arrangements, written and agreed to between the parties. Charles W A Morton. The letter is in very fine condition with dark writing.
