He was the last Maharaja of Lahore during the Sikh Raj of Punjab. He was the youngest son of the legendary Lion of the Punjab (Maharaja Ranjit Singh) and the Messalina of the Punjab (M…aharani Jind Kaur). He was exiled to Britain at age 15 and was befriended and much admired by Queen Victoria.

Login (1820-1904) brought the deposed Maharaja Duleep Singh to England in 1854, oversaw his education, and also took charge of Queen Victoria's goddaughter, Princess Gouramma of Coorg. This is an important work of Sikh historiography and record of life in British India. Logi…n married Dr John Login in Lucknow in 1842. "Learning the court language, she was readily accepted into the zenanas of the royal family and other nawabs. From within the zenana she was able to assist in the medical diagnoses of her husband, who was barred from a physical examination of his female patients, and in subsequent treatment. Dr Login also had political duties, and his wife, aware of the power exercised by the ladies of the zenana, was able to help him in an area otherwise closed to him" (ODNB). Compiled from Lena Login's journals by her daughter, Lady Login's Recollections was published in 1916 by Smith, Elder & Co. Following its purchase of Smith, Elder in 1917, John Murray issued remaining copies with a cancel title page (which describes this second issue as a "second edition") and in a binding of light blue cloth, compared to the dark blue cloth of the first issue. Colour portrait frontispiece (with captioned tissue guard), 8 half-tone plates, facsimile letter from Queen Victoria mounted on stub at p. 184 as issued. Add to basketsaying that he has "this moment received an invitation from Windsor for Thursday the 11th. therefore will you come on Monday the 15th.", 1 side 8vo., Claridge's Hotel headed paper, no date, watermarked Duleep Singh arrived in England in late 1854 and was introduced to the British court. Queen Victoria showered affection upon the… turbaned Maharaja, as did the Prince Consort. Duleep Singh was initially lodged at Claridge's Hotel in London before the East India Company took over a house in Wimbledon and then eventually another house in Roehampton which became his home for three years. He was also invited by the Queen to stay with the Royal Family at Osborne, where she sketched him playing with her children and Prince Albert photographed him, while the court artist, Winterhalter, made his portrait. He eventually got bored with Roehampton and expressed a wish to go back to India but it was suggested by the East India Company Board he take a tour of the European continent which he did with Sir John Spencer Login and Lady Login. He was a member of the Photographic Society, later the Royal Photographic Society, from 1855 until his death. The recipient is almost certainly Lieutenant-Colonel James OLIPHANT (1796-1881), sometime Chairman of the East India Company. Subsequently, Oliphant was Equerry to the Maharajah. His transition from the East India Company to the employ of the Maharajah is touched upon in Wikipedia's article on Oliphant and in Lady Login's memoir Sir John Login and Duleep Singh (London, 1890), pp. 444-445.
