Softcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. An Afternoon in Waterloo Park evokes feelings, sights, and textures of experience of a bygone period. Prompted by the emotional strain of his mother's death in 1968, Gerald Dumas contemplates three generations of his family and lyrically records impressions of life on Dickerson Avenue in Detroit. This is a complex family story, recollected from the surface of childhood and pondered from the depths of mature experience. Dumas' poetic form allows for closely packed images not possible in prose. What Our Town did in its attempt to find a value for the smallest events of everyday life in early twentieth-century New England, An Afternoon in Waterloo Park achieves for midcentury mid-America-a real and honest evocation of going home. Piece(s) of the spine missing. Ex-Libris and is stamped as such. Solid binding. Please note the image in this listing is a stock photo and may not match the covers of the actual item. Book.

Add to basketFirst edition of the Fitz-Gerald translation. 12-page introduction & 259 pages of text + 8 plates, 4 of them prints of photographs from the 1899 Sydney Grundy theatrical dramatisation at the Haymarket Theatre, the book evidently published to capitalise on the play's success, with a list of the cast included, and the remaining 4 by John Hassall, one of his earliest commissions as a book illustrator. The plates are all present though not in quite the locations indicated by the list of illustrations. The book is bound in the publisher's red cloth, lettered and illustrated in gilt and black, the cloth is lightly marked and the extremities are bumped and rubbed. The text block is age browned and becoming brittle, slightly marked and foxed, with cracking at points, a few dog-eared corners and small chips to page edges, gathering H is loose and in danger of becoming detached, and there is a neatly written ink gift inscription to the front endpaper, which has a short closed tear to the top edge. Somewhat miraculously the dust jacket survives and is pleasingly lettered and illustrated in black, taking though not fully replicating elements of the design from the boards beneath, it is quite heavily foxed and grubby, also slightly toned, with a few small chips and short closed tears to the edges. Dumas's famous dramatic novel based on the Dutch tulip mania of the seventeenth century. An interesting book for at least four reasons: it is the first appearance of the Adair Fitz-Gerald translation, which remained in print until the mid-twentieth century and was used for the 1951 Limited Editions Club version; it contains some of Hassall's earliest work as an illustrator, and was an early example of the new cheap printing techniques being used to reproduce photographic stills from a successful theatrical adaptation, pioneering a marketing technique which publishers would employ frequently in the age of cinema. It is also rare, both commercially and in institutional holdings, presumably due to the cheap and fragile nature of production, and remarkably it retains its original Victorian dust jacket.
