Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. In an attempt to get the profligate Restoration poet's work before a wider audience than he previously enjoyed, the editor offers what he considers the best of Rochester. (Concerning 'Sodom,' the play attributed to Rochester but denied by many as falsely attributed, Duncan calls it "a filthy and illiterate piece," and says that he has "laboured through this obscene doggerel and there cannot be the slightest doubt that Rochester is not the author. It was impossible for him to write three lines without spilling his wit or displaying his competence as a literary craftsman."). Cream cloth, 143 pages (including notes, bibliography), frontispiece. Gently bumped spine ends, tanning, general wear, in edgeworn dust jacket w/sun-darkened spine, chipping to corners/spine ends, small triangular piece from bottom right corner of front panel (1" along bottom edge, 3/8" up front fold). Size: 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Book.

First edition. 286pp., a 2 page catalogue, frontispiece portrait, 9 other black and white plates and head and tail chapter decorations. Adverts to endpapers. John Stuart Blackie (1809-1895) was a Scottish scholar and man of letters. After attending classes at Edinburgh University (1825-1826). He spent three years at Aberdeen as a student of theology, and in 1829 he went to Germany. After studying at Göttingen and Berlin he accompanied Bunsen to Italy and Rome. The years spent abroad extinguished his former wish to enter the Church, and at his father's desire he gave himself up to the study of law. Blackie was a Radical and Scottish nationalist in politics; and possessed of great conversational powers and general versatility, his picturesque eccentricity made him one of the characters of the Edinburgh of the day. This is a biographical appreciation of his life and work by various authors including J.M. Barrie, edited by Rev. John G. Duncan of Springburn. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered bevelled boards with gold titling on the spine and black titling with a gold portrait of Blackie on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some light soiling to the boards. There is a little wear to the cloth on the tips of the bottom corners and the spine ends. The spine is faded. The contents are tight and clean with browning and light foxing to the endpapersprelims. Previous owner's address to half title page.
