Condition: Sehr gut. Borthwick Papers; 46. 29 S.; geheftet. Ein sehr gutes Exemplar. - Aus dem Nachlass von Michael Richter. - This disease, which was to cause such consternation, was unknown in this country and had no known cure, although it was soon common knowledge that it frequently killed its victims within three hours of onset. The symptoms were acute. Cholera began with giddiness, a sick stomach, nervous agitation, intermittent pulse, and cramps in the extremities which rapidly moved to the trunk. Then followed acute vomiting, and purging of fluid like rice water. The features contracted and the eyes sank, leaving an expression of terror and wildness. The whole surface of the body had a leaden blue, black or deep brown tint, varying in shade with the intensity of the attack. The fingers and toes were reduced in size, the skin became wrinkled and folded, while the pulse virtually disappeared. The skin was cold and clammy, while the tongue remained moist 'but flabby and chilled like a piece of dead fish'. Respiration became irregular, rigid spasms occurred in the legs and arms, and the secretion of urine was totally suspended. At this stage the patient fell into a coma from which he virtually never recovered. York, the eighty-fifth town to be attacked by cholera in 1832, was a medium-sized pre-industrial market town, with a population of 26,260, an increase of 20.5% since the Census of 1821. It was not a manufacturing town. Its largest industries centred around the manufacture of glass bottles and phials for York's wholesale drug trade, comb-making, and several small linen manufactories. The majority of the population were employed as small independent producers, working for and living off the large number of what the Census Abstracts would call 'Independents', i.e. those of independent means such as landowners, annuitants and rich widows. York had not changed since Francis Drake had written in 1736 that 'the chief support of the city at present is the resort to and residence of several country gentlemen with their families in it'. The chief function of York therefore was basically parasitic, to act as a natural distributing centre for the produce which came from the surrounding rich agricultural plain, and to supply the landowners and gentlemen with essential and luxury goods.
