Wartime novel set around the Yugoslavian resistance to the occupying Axis forces and sympethisers, and the later stand against Stalin. Writer Lawrence Durrell served for many years in the Foreign Service of the British government; around the time that Marshal Tito's Yugoslavia broke ties with Stalin's Cominform, Durrell was posted by the British Council to Belgrade, until 1952. This experience gave him material for his novel White Eagles over Serbia. During the war Tito's Partisans were aided by Allied commandos, led by SAS officer and diplomat Fitzroy Maclean, who is widely regarded as a model for Ian Fleming's James Bond.
