Add to basket3/4 Calf Binding. Condition: Very Good. 4to. Bound in 3/4 Morocco in the French style in the last quarter of the 19th Century (ca 1880). Borders in double-rule gilt and finely tooled spine in six compartments with title in gilt. Marbled end-papers. Top edge gilt. Polyglott (Dutch & French) edition of traditional costume in Holla…nd at the beginning of the 20th Century. Each of the 20 copper engravings has been wonderfully hand-colored. A watermark on the front of the top edge carries through most of the book leaving water-marks approximately 3/4' down and 3-4 inches wide. None of the text or the images is affected by this. Overall a very pleasing copy of a contemporary glimpse into Dutch life at the turn of the 18th to the 19th century.

Add to basketHalf Morocco, Cloth boards. Condition: Very Good. Large 4to. 30 by 25 cm. With 21 hand-colored plates including allegorical frontis plate watermarked 1811 with the names of Maaskamp and Colnaghi & Co. of London. (The title gives publication date of 1808, as is also embossed in gilt on spine foot, but given watermarking, this cop…y should be viewed as the second edition (the first was issued in 1803) and the first edition issued in English.) Plates engraved by Portman after paintings of J. Kuyper. Colas 1681. Hiler 557. The plates stand out among so many others of the same era for their depiction of people doing things. These are truly genre scenes, as opposed to static costume poses, and they thus deliver visual information about aspects of the livelihood, custom and culture of the Dutch. Foxing of preliminaries and final leaves, with some scattered foxing elsewhere, affecting mostly text pages. Most of the plates are clean or have the lightest of marginal foxing. Joints rubbed.

Add to basketAmsterdam; E. Maaskamp, Aupres du Palais. [1811]. 4to. Finely and handsomely bound in half tan Regency calf over marbled boards, the spine with 5 raised bands exquisitely and extravagantly decorated in gilt in compartments with a repeating scroll-tool design, lettered direct in gilt, marbled endpapers and edges, housed within a…custom-made beige cloth-covered fall-down-back box with green cloth label lettered in gilt; pp. [58]; with fine stipple-engraved, and hand-coloured, allegorical frontispiece of the Muse of Drawing by Louis Portman after Jacques Kuyper, together with 20 other fine, and exquisite, engraved plates with detailed and expert hand-colouring throughout; a wonderfully pleasing copy; externally fine; recently expertly, and invisibly, rejointed at upper board by the peerless Charles Gledhill, internally also preserved in exceptionally crisp state with occasional very light, and inoffensive, browning and spotting (almost exclusively confined to text pages) and some of the unavoidable offsetting from plates to blank guards, with a neat contemporary inscription, dated 1817, to front blank.Early, revised, edition, complete with an additional 4 plates, with extensive explanatory text in both Dutch and French. This work originally appeared in 5 instalments from 1803 to 1807, with a total of 16 plates. All images carry the imprint of Evert Maaskamp and Colnaghi & Co., apart from plate 1, which only mentions the Dutch printer. It is a historically, ethnologically, and culturally, important volume of prints of costumes of the various Batavian provinces, designed to underline their antique origin, and their "absolute Dutchness". The venture was also, in part, a propaganda exercise, designed to reinforce Dutch national identity following a period of political unrest. Similar works had appeared in France, England, Germany and Switzerland in response to the growing intellectual interest in the study of popular culture. This also stimulated artistic, and commercial, competition between nations. The beautiful and animated backgrounds which were drawn from nature, the beautifully observed and documented details of costume (which were drawn from life), and the extensive anecdotal text, provide a social, cultural, and historical context for the dress (Eveline Koolhaas-Grosfeld. "Une nouvelle image des Pays-Bas: l'identite nationale par l'estampe").

Add to basketFull Calf. Condition: Near Fine. Second Edition. With 21 hand-colored plates watermarked from 1803 and 1811 (mostly the latter) with the names of Maaskamp and Colnaghi & Co. of London. Plates engraved by Portman after paintings of J. Kuyper. Colas 1681. Hiler 557. The plates stand out among so many others of the same era for the…ir depiction of people doing things. These are truly genre scenes, as opposed to static costume poses, and they thus deliver visual information about aspects of the livelihood, custom and culture of the Dutch, as intended by the book's title, which translates as "Representations of the Costume, Morals and Customs of Holland in the Early 19th Century". While there is some scattered light foxing in the book, the plates themselves are for the most part exceptionally bright and clean. A few leaves have a tight crease now flattened -- the one plate that this affects it does so de minimus-ly and is scarcely worth comment. The full calf has shelfwear evident in the corners and some other scuff marks, with a small strip of surface leather lifted on the rear board. The front gutter shows past separation which now remedied but the crack visually remains apparent the whole way down, with some spots of raw leather showing along this line. Nonetheless the leather remains quite attractive and the defect remaining worth tolerating. But for this flaw the book might be described as fine.

(S.H. Levie in Het Vaderlandsch gevoel, 1978, p.186).
