Published by Illustrated Directory Company, 1896
Seller: ExileBooks, Saint Paul, MN, U.S.A.
Softcover, Wraps. Condition: Good. This black-and-white facsimile reproduces The Illustrated Directory of Oakland, California, Comprising Views of Business Blocks, with Reference to Owners, Occupants, Professions and Trades, and Brief History of the City, published in 1896 by the Illustrated Directory Company of Oakland under manager E.S. Glover, with printing by the Oakland Enquirer Publishing Co. The Illustrated Directory volumes are among the most visually rich civic records of late nineteenth-century American cities, and Oakland was one of only two cities the firm ever profiled â" the other being its companion volume on San Francisco. By 1896, Oakland had grown from a Gold Rushâ"era ferry stop into the second-largest city in California, anchored by the western terminus of the Central Pacific Railroad, a thriving Pacific port, and the rapidly expanding industrial corridor along the East Bay shoreline. The directory captures Oakland on the cusp of its early twentieth-century boom, just before the 1906 San Francisco earthquake would dramatically reshape the entire Bay Area and accelerate Oakland's growth. Issued as a large folio volume in maroon pebbled cloth with gilt-stamped title, the original was a substantial reference work intended for civic boosters, businessmen, and visitors. Summary of Contents The directory opens with a brief history of the city and is profusely illustrated throughout with photo-engravings depicting Oakland's streetscapes, prominent businesses, commercial blocks, civic buildings, hotels, banks, manufacturing concerns, and notable residences. Block-by-block views of business blocks allow readers to walk Oakland's principal commercial corridors as they appeared in 1896, with individual storefronts, signage, and architectural details rendered from contemporary photographs. Each block is keyed to its owners, occupants, professions, and trades â" making the volume a hybrid of city directory, business guide, and visual urban portrait. Featured establishments span the full range of Oakland's late nineteenth-century commercial life, from retail merchants and wholesalers to professional offices, financial institutions, hotels and restaurants, transportation companies, and industrial operations, each typically accompanied by a descriptive entry covering the firm's history, principals, lines of business, and location. An essential reference for genealogists researching Oakland and East Bay families, historians of nineteenth-century California urban development and commerce, architectural historians documenting pre-earthquake Bay Area buildings, and collectors of illustrated American city directories. 212 pages. Black and white. 8.5" x 11".
