Er war mit Erich Heckel und Karl Schmidt-Rottluff und besonders eng mit dem Dichter Hermann Kasack befreundet und war das Vorbild für die Figur des Malers Catell in dessen Roman "Die Stadt hinter dem Strom". Seine zweite Frau, die nach seinem frühen Tod den Musikhistoriker Ferdinand Eckhardt heiratete, lebte seit 1953 als bekannte Musikerin in Winnipeg, Kanada.
